Hi guys,

I am posting just if you can help me out on make running coppermine CPU (using a slotket MS6905 Master V2) on a MS-6163 Pro (v2).

Currently, my MS-6163 Pro (v2) is running fine with a P3 500Mhz on slot 1. As I am running 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 AGP as GPU card, my thoughts is that in some cases the current processor is actling as a bottleneck.

Because of so, I planned to upgrade the processor with a Coppermine one like P3 1Ghz (socket 370) or with a Celeron 1.1Ghz (socket 370) using a slotket.
First, I verified that my motherboard VRM is 8.4 compliant and it seems because the DC-DC is SC1153CSW. Then, I upgraded the BIOS to the latest one (W6163MJ V3.10 101100).

After that I went through installing the P3 1Ghz on the slotket using default jumpers but no video post. Tried manually setting the jumpers to the right settings for this processor but no post at all. I tried to do the same but using the Celeron 1,1Ghz but no post at all.

Any thoughts or suggestions? :\

Thanks so much!

What exact settings you has changed? There is should be voltage , frequency and multiplier. I have same slocket and have no problems with p 3 900mhz .

Hi! Thanks for your reply!

I looked for the manual about MS6905 Master v2 and found one that has the same jumper layout as mine:

During all those tests I meassured the VRM voltage to make sure that the proper voltage was delivered to the CPU based on the jumpers and the voltage is fine (around 1,76v).
I noticed that there are SW2 and SW3 on the motherboard that seems intended for setting the FSB but no way I tray.

What else I am missing?

Thanks

J3 should be open or 1-2 as you set it to dual processor

Sure, it was always open in all tests :\

Try 1-2 then
Also check SW2 on mb
and try set 100mhz fsb on slocket
In a matter of curiosity I took out from pc my slocket so here is photo

I tested this combination a while back (but for a different reason) and had no problems getting the system to boot correctly - Re: MS-6905 slotket V2.3 works fine, V2 only at 100MHz

I tried your suggestion, but no luck at all. Even if I set 100mhz fsb, no video post.

The problem with 20+ year old hardware is that no one knows its origin.
Often, a buggy hardware is put in at shelf for later, found after 10 years and sold as "brand new stock"

Need other CPU(preferably cu-mine Celeron 566)&slotcet for testing purpose

It`s may bee BIOS problem too.

You are completely right 😀
Continuing with my tests, I have also checked slotket capacitors and all seems to be fine.
I think I am going to look for a Celeron (Mendocino) to test it using the slotket, just to confirm if the slotket is defective or the MS6163Pro v2 is the culprit.

Keep you updated

It`s no good idea. Slotket for Mendocino is little different, and BIOS capability is almost 100% for slot1 Motherboard.
Pin-out Celeron Cu-mine 566 is almost like Mendocino (many pre-Coppermine motherboard work whit it fine).
It`s allow to check BIOS & VRM of MB.

Check isolation pin AM2 and connection X4 & AH4

Ok, I just checked X4 and AH4 and both seems to be bridged 😀 But I just checked AM2 and it is not isolated, makes sense? I have read that for coppermine to be supported, it has to be like you said (AM2 isolated and X4 - AH4 bridged).

AM2 at ground - protection against using Cu-mine on an old motherboards)
This is its only function.

Celeron 566 Coppermine, for some reason, does not have such protection- a gift from Intel.
This bug was then quickly corrected. 😀

strange.
BIOS since version 3.2 support Cu-mine
- Added support for PPGA370 Coppermine(R) CPU.

Last BIOS - v 3A

You may try BiosPatcher. Its find some fixes for 3.A version

Can't be an issue with the latest official BIOS...that was the one I was using in my post further back without problems, so I had the same board,BIOS, slotket and cpu combo working as the OP is trying - must be either a hardware or setting issue.

Then yes.
Or look for another slotket with a CPU, or immediately take this thing

PS. Didn't know slot coppermines existed

A couple of years ago I was in the posession of an MSI 6163 Pro ver.2 and it ran a Coppermine Celeron 1100MHz on an Iwill slotket just fine (but I never tried it with an FSB 133 cpu).
If the board (which is a very nice -and- fast motherboard) still runs with the P3 500Mhz slot 1 today (does it?) then my suspicion is that there is something wrong with the slotket or the way you handle it because it is not very likely that -both- the two processors that you have tried are faulty.
The MSI slotket that you have was the first in a series of 4 versions- in other words the first design was updated or improved upon 3 times.
