Hi everyone,

I have a GA-586-ATS motherboard with a Dallas DS12887 battery onboard.

Of course it's dead and I've seen on a LGR video where he desolders the old one to be replaced by a modern CR2032 CMOS battery. I've seen in other threads though that maybe the battery just lifts off and can be replaced with a modern alternative, rather than having to desolder it. I've attached some photos and to me it looks like the top section will come away from the bottom soldered part. I've not tried yet though for fear of damaging anything.

I want to put in a modern CR2032 somehow, so I guess either I have to desolder the whole thing, or remove only the top and then replace it with some modern battery replacement board?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The battery is epoxied to the chip. something like you get a plastic cup, connect the battery to the chip , fill the plastic cup with a specified amount of epoxy and put battery & chip into it.
Flip it upside down and you have your standard dallas RTC cmos package.

there are replacements available for sale.
or if you feel handy enough, there's two spaces with no pin protruding that need to be filed down until the pins show. Disconnect the old battery by cutting the pins in the middle, and attach a cr2032 battery holder with some wires, making sure you get the polarity correct. and then placing a battery in the cr2032 battery holder.

Also

it is clear from your photos that you do not need to desolder your dallas chip, since it is already socketed. Just gently lift one side with a screw driver, then the other, back and forth just a little till it comes out.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

No de-soldering needed, that thing is socketed.

You can just buy a new replacement and you'll set for another 20 years.
Or you could get a reworked replacement with replaceable battery, like the one Necroware does.

And finally, you can mod the one you have to bypass the internal battery.
Its not hard but requires some patience and a few simple tools.

Thanks everyone. I just ordered the Necroware replacement off eBay so let's see how that goes. Seems the best option long term. Hopefully just a case of swapping it out. I appreciate the help.
