Just bought this game off ebay, haven't played it in over twenty years and man does it look "rough" even compared to Doom2 or DN3D! Are there any NEW mods coming out? I know of the DarkXL and Jedi Academy mods but they're limited to so many levels from what I hear.

On a side note never have played Jedi Academy, is it worth checking out? Yes I'm a BIG Star Wars fan!

I believe I played a lot of Jedi Academy in 2003, was quite enjoyable. At least from the point of "me minus 15 years from now". Can't recall any details about the campaign, but spent at least a few months in multiplayer on my old hood's LAN. And yeah, I'm a sucker for Star Wars (original) too.

Can't help you with modding, but I've formed some strong opinion on the topic of the "roughness" myself. Could be because I never owned a proper 3d accelerator in the 90s (in fact, I had some card with just 2 megs of ram - that I can remember), but I hated how the early 3d looked then, probably even more than I do now - at least today I have some warm nostalgia for it. I think that's one of the reasons I prefer isometric titles and pixels. And, if I must to deal with something 3d-accellerated - software rendering makes it much much better. Nevertheless, got a Voodoo1 for my MMX machine. Just to keep it in tune with the time 😀.

I actually think it looks amazing - sounds amazing too. My issue is the maze-like design of the mid-to-late levels, the constant backtracking and doing laps killed it for me.

At the time Dark Forces looked *amazing*. It WAS Star Wars, and you were actually in that universe, fighting the forces of evil. Admittedly, that was back before 3D cards, when Doom, with it's low frame-rate (on machines of the time) and 300 x 200 resolution still managed to draw gasps of amazement from newcomers. And Dark Forces really drew you into the game-world, with it's fantastically authentic graphics and sound, environments and details.

The laser fire looked and sounded as it did in the movies, the storm-troopers touched their masks with their hand to activeate the radio communications as they did in the movies, the Imperial control rooms and corridors looked like they did in the movies, everything was just so amazingly well done.

There's a ton of community level mods / player mods / etc. here: https://df-21.net/
(Their forums went down a few years ago, here's one backup from 2010: http://df-21.net/oldforum/
Current one here: https://df-21.net/forum/ )

But I think what you were asking about was engine mods, to create a higher-resolution game? No, there's nothing newer than the two you mention, so far as I know.

This guy talked about using Unreal Engine in 2017:

This one guy's been remaking the first level in Unreal Engine 4 tho:

https://www.dsogaming.com/screenshot-news/new … nreal-engine-4/
Only the first level, and it's looking like not for public consumption.

That's all I know.
