This is pure speculation, so I might be wrong. But I don't think this was done with a soundfont device or any other General Midi setup. I'm pretty sure something more professional (e.g. NI Kontakt and a good (read multi gigabyte) orchestra bank) was used for these recordings. Most likely with some edits of the original midi files for using different instrument articulations in one track and such things.

I changed ykhwong's build of dosbox to be large address aware to use the Crysis 3.01 soundfont that was recommended here but the gain on the font is to low. Does anyone know a way to set the gain without a separate build? I was thinking synth.gain=* would work as shown here
Fluidsynth soundfont patch
It's a rather old post and there's been a patch incorporated into the build since so I don't know anything more. Maybe it was an internal string and not able to be set in the conf file? Any suggestions or am I just a retard and doing something obviously wrong.

"Setzer's SPC Soundfont" is great if you're nostalgic for low-fi sample based music. It makes MIDI sound like SNES games! 😁

I don't think it sounds that great overall, but it does have some nice presets.

Intercept: it's not the strings being too loud, it's the distortion guitar being too quiet.
SINT5: some presets are missing it seems, since it starts playing something at 0:47.

Not to hijack the thread's original intent, but an observation. These recommendations are fantastic for those who want to go above and beyond with MIDI composition and software.

How about recommendations for the best soundfont that'll fit on an AWE32/64? That would be a winner for the average Joe.

These merlin fonts are pretty good.

12mb will work on an Awe32 and its free.

FYI, a more "official" version of the AWE32 ROM in soundfont format is included with E-mu's "SoundFont Librarian".

Google "sflib10c.zip" ( https://www.google.com/search?q=%22sflib10c.zip%22 ), and the included "1MGM.sf2" file is the one.

If you have 32MB of RAM on your AWE32, the previously mentioned "ChoriumRevA" soundfont ( http://us.un4seen.com/files/x/ChoriumRevA.zip ) is super.

If you only have 8MB of RAM on your AWE32, nothing beats the good old "08MB E-mu Systems GM Revision B" soundfont ("8MBGM.sf2"), included in this download -> http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … menustate=54,51 😀

I get a 403 - Forbidden error on that link. Also, the AWE32 maxes out at 28MB of RAM (addressing limitation.) I was going to check and see the size, but can't download it. So, if the font is 32MB it won't load on an AWE32.

As far as the size, that's what I meant... only 28MB of RAM can be accessed on an AWE32 with 32MB of RAM installed (the ChoriumRevA soundfont is 28 MB.)

The 8MBGM.sf2 was the default SoundFont for me for a few years, but I eventually replaced it with the 4MB Voice Crystal (commercial) SoundFont, which has better drums for one. Recordings here.

I use this Utopia Live! font alot too, there is a 27.5mb and 24mb font vers included that will load on an AWE, along with others optimized for the Audigy too.
I dunno where you can buy this anymore, sad really its very good.
I bought it way back in the dial-up days, and have it archived to disc.
Found a youtube video with someone playing back some music with it.

Gravis Ultrasound Classic Patch Set 1.6 soundfont. Sounds very close to a GUS and works perfect in BASSMIDI. I don't think I've ever swapped it out for more than a day, except for WeedsGM3. 🤣

Tried Weeds GM3, found myself preferring SGM-V2.01 (with Drums! by Slavo). Don't know about ChoriumReva.

How about commercial sound fonts like Sonivox? Anyone tried those?
