I found a USB FM module online, here is the site:
http://gimic.jp/index.php?Getting%20Started%20with%20GIMIC

Is there anything like this available in the USA?

Example on Youtube:
"Palace of Destruction / YS" on G.I.M.I.C (OPM)

I did a google search for gimic and dosbox and it led me to this page:

But I don't understand Japanese.

Is that the dosbox binary you used?

I made some test recordings from Gimic.
They can be found here: gimic_test_recordings/fm/
The most intersting ones for Vogoners would be the ones marked PCDOS 😀

Great quality.

So, what are your impressions on the GIMIC FM module?

I found a demo showing the inputs, outputs, and software, but it looks like the program is in Japanese. Or do you not need the software for the device to function?

I like it, i'm not a programmer though so i can only use programs that other people made, so i have used GIMIC with Dosbox and Hoot so far.. the s98 player program seen in the video you linked (Gimic remote) do i not understand how to use 😀

The only "problem" is what i mentioned earlier, GIMIC can't play samples thru OPL3 that some Microprose games do and also playing samples thru the OPNA or more precisley the YM2149 part of the OPNA does not sound so good either, now i don't know if this is a limitaion of GIMIC (being a USB device and such) or just a software problem, the C86CTL page seems to mention something about PCM functionality as a "to do".

ym2151's Double Dragon & Dai makaimura (But stage 2 not 1) is awesome!!!

Double Dragon for example, emulation sounds like duck's "Quack"ing.

I want to hear Alpha Mission, Out Run & Terra Cresta!!! They had great FM, PSG sounds either.

ik777, i have uploaded recordings of Terra Cresta music both OPL and YM2149(SSG) versions of the main theme.

Out Run and Alpha Mission 2 uses PCM also and Gimic only play FM and PSG.

Oh, I should asked Quartet not Out Run. And Alpha Mission (1) was OPL, I thought it was PSG.

Can you play this file using G.I.M.I.C? This file is ripoff of "YS2 Special"(DOS version) opening theme only released in Korea. This music is good at comparing real OPL vs emulation in my country.

What is the best player to play the YS2 music you wanted to hear recordings from?

I have uploaded a Alpha Mission recording, please remember Gimic play it using OPL3 and even if OPL3 claims to be OPL1/2 compatible so does it not always sound identical.
You could compare by switching OPL3 and OPL2 emulation in Dosbox to hear for yourself the differences.

I used Hoot to play the arcade music from ASO and i don't think the arcade emulation has been updated in a long time in Hoot, so not even a real FM soundchip will solve problems with the emulation of the sound drivers... although ASO sounded ok while other games play badly, like Ninja Spirit (YM2151) wich is bad in both software emulation and even worse on a real YM2151 because of bad sound drivers in Hoot.

Also i think some old versions of MAME do support the ability to play OPL music using a real AdLib/SB card if you have it installed 😀

Adlib Visual Composer is the player written in English.
www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=AdLi ... oser_(DOS)

If you are not allergy in Asian letters, go there for player. (I used Ocplay for ys2s music. you can download lots of old korea song.)

The debates of "emulation VS h/w" and "OPL2 VS OPL3" continuing long enough in Vogons or anywhere talking about FM sound. Most agreeable conclusion is The OPL3 emulation is accurate enough, but a little lacks in OPL2. Switching option in DOSBOX never helps.
The game sounds only compatible in OPL3 and never sounds in OPL2, it sounds awesome in emulation 😲 .(For example, some DOS/V games only sounds in sound blaster pro 2 above.

Yes, The man who use old mame for real FM h/w is me. 😀

Ok.. i have uploaded a recording of the ys2 song you wanted ik777 😀

Nice work. Listening your recording and compare it with emulation. The Beginning cymbals(?) is obviously different.
Your G.I.M.I.C. does as same sounds as expected H/W FM.

I don't know who uploaded it in Youtube, but it is a good comparison with your effort.

I wonder how the song sounds across platforms, as Y's 2 is also on PC-98, X1, FM-7, MSX2, NES, turbografx..

It is not Ys 2, it's Ys 2 "Special" exclusively released in korea.
