30 Minutes - Ambient Music (Nevada City by Huma-Huma)

Hey man, if you're into darker ambient this has been holding my ear lately. It's a live stream with a good rotation. Nice cyberpunk atmosphere to it.

This sounds interesting, thanks again ^^

The new Loverboy single "Release" - Paul Dean's running one of those new Odyssey guitars that build off of his 80's models that Hondo copied from the looks of it (Leo Quan bridge and different pickup placement). - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWMEJzHP5os&l … JzHP5os&index=1

Also been listening to a lot of Godsmack. Life outside vintage computers (or computers in general) has been absolute hell lately. Been wanting to punch something, that music is a bit cathartic for that for me.

Philip Glass - Glassworks

Instrumental music transcends language and culture barriers . Probably one of the reasons why so called classical music is listened to all over the world.

Awesome. I always am pulled back to the Skyrim OST as well. It really is a masterpiece. That link is 10 hours of it with rain ambience.

Edit: Btw... that Cryo Chamber stream link is now dead. New one here >> https://youtu.be/uCf3Q43fC_4

Feels weird talking about this at Vogons. :p I'm like, "appiah-of-the-thousand-soundcards is into black metal?, no way!", haha. Anyway...

An old classic has finally caught my attention. I read angrymetalguy's superlatives several times over the years, knowing this was a great album. It's certainly less heavy and less complex than plenty I've loved over the decades, so there's no issues on that front. It's just never hooked me, I wasn't in the right mindset / time-of-life to grasp it.

It seems that for me, 2022 is the year of The Ocean (and specifically, 2013's "Pelagial" - simultaneously released as vocal and instrumental versions). I have never appreciated the doom metal side of things before now, but this album is just intense in it's atmospheres, tensions and resolutions, and sheer emotional depth. And some really wicked heaviness and riffs speckled in there, to boot! Something to put on in the background of a rainy day and, without even realising it, fall in love..

...a [concept] album that musically delves into the depths of the ocean—diving through the different aquatic layers (Epipelagic, Mesopelagic, Bathyalpelagic, Abyssopelagic, Hadopelagic, Demersal and finally Benthic). Like the ocean, the pressure builds as one gets deeper. Layer for layer, the record puts new details and heaviness into every new track, culminating in funeral doom crushingness on final track “Benthic.”

Lyrically, this is a record about delving into our psychology. So here the story also digs deeper and deeper into the conscious mind, using the oceanic layers and pressure as an analogy. The result is two brilliant records: the instrumental album which is immense, perfect and never lacking in interesting pieces. But also, the lyrical album continues to impress and grow. The concept fits perfectly with the music, which is a single piece of music from start to finish, and is evocative, emotional and smart. The Ocean have nailed it.

Doom Metal never worked for me, but I'll give it a listen anyway. The albums I'm listening to most these days are Iotunn - Access All Worlds, Vektor - Terminal Redux and Kreator - Gods of Violence (guilty pleasure 🤣). At the moment I'm listening to Haggard - Eppur Si Muove though.

\nn/

Also I love AMG's blog but as the number of reviewers increased I find it rather difficult to blindly go by their recommendations anymore. Some of their people dig really weird shit I don't really relate with.

Doom metal never worked for me either. If I'm honest, don't bother with the Pelagial album except for the tracks "Bathyalpelagic I - III". Think of those 3 as a single prog-metal song. I rather like it, especially when it gets heavy, but (like most concept music) it needs to be taken as a whole.

I find that a lot of metal review sites suffer from the inconsistency effect you mentioned. Therefore I do not use any particular site as a gospel, but merely try to skim a "best of" from them occasionally, as a basis for further exploration. Simple focused sites like soulkillerwebzine are just as good as big budget AMG-style sites.

I think I have that Vektor album you mentioned, picked it up (quite some time ago) upon good reviews, but can't recall too much about it offhand. I will have another listen sometime soon upon your recommendation.

Skyrim OST. It's the sound track you hear when you're in Blackreach (Jeremy Soule - Beneath the Ice)

Funny story about Jeremy Soule - many years ago I was looking for various game music sound track CDs, and happened upon a sealed and new Icewind Dale CD on ebay. I had no idea about composers or whatever at that time - just wanted the music on CD. And that the sellers ebay name was 'jsoule' did not ring any bells. But for some reason I remembered the name for some time.

Years later, it then dawned on me that I had actually bought the CD from the very person that had composed the music...😆
(at least I am quite sure it must've been him)
