I was wondering if anybody knows of any software that can determine the temperature of the GPU on a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000. None of the software I have (Everest Home (ver. 2.X something), Motherboard Monitor 5, and Hardware Info 32), cannot detect my Voodoo3's temps. If someone can point me to such a given thing of software, or tell me such software does not exist, that would be great!

For reference, I have an Asus P3B-F motherboard with a Pentium III 600E and, of course, a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000, all running under Windows 98 SE.

Thanks! 😀

I would be surprised if there are any sort of temperature sensors on this card.

My builds!
The FireStarter 2.0 - The wooden K5
The Underdog - The budget K6
The Voodoo powerhouse - The power-hungry K7
The troll PC - The Socket 423 Pentium 4

Yeh doubt the card has any sensors.
But your motherboard has a header just near the CPU ladled "JTPWR"
But you can get a 2 pin Thermal sensor similar to ones that come fan controllers like the below and use that to monitor the temperature.

temperature monitors in "GPUs" became common around 2004+
for the voodoo the old method of touching the heatsink is what you have,

but yes you could install some sort of sensor and get a reading if you want.

Voodoos normally ran hot with the stock cooling, but if you add a little extra, like a fan on the passive cards you should be good.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses! 😀

That explains the reason why there is no direct way of measuring the temperature of the Voodoo3's GPU "directly".

The reason why I want to get the GPU's temperature directly is, besides just "it's good to know", is that I want to overclock the card.

This I have already addressed. Behold, my Voodoo3 with a 40x40x10mm silent Noctua fan (NF-A4x10):

I learned of such an idea from PhilsComputerLab (his video on the matter of cooling a Voodoo3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aszC13E-B-k). Great guy!

I also plan to put heatsinks like this:

on the VRAM modules on the card to keep the memory cool while overclocking.

That's is indeed what my motherboard has, and now I have an excuse to use it. 😀

"One" more question then, chinny22: How would you suggest to attach that "JTPWR" sensor to the heatsink on my Voodoo3? Tape? Thermal tape? Something-with-thermal-in-its-name-that-is-sticky? Or maybe just zip-tie it somehow to the heatsink? I mean, the sensor should be in physical contact with the thing it's sensing the temperature of, right? Thanks in advance!

I use thermal tape, only because I had some left over from a fan controller, But I would think Something-with-sticky-in-its-name would be good enough really.
Like you said just as long as its in contact with the chip/heatsink
