What software are people using to edit/produce retro videos? I am thinking of doing some, 1080p is enough.

I just use OBS to record whatever as MP4 encoded in such a manner to minimize "processing time" on YouTube's part. I don't do any video editing.

When I used to do video editing, I was a moron with Windows Movie Maker, and then few years later after that "period" I was given Camtasia Studio as a gift but I no longer have the product code for it anymore so... I just don't bother with editing at all.

I'm not confident in there being any actual video editing suite that runs natively under Linux that wont crash at the drop of a hairpin, which makes me not bother with trying to do editing in the first place.

Da Vinci Resolve has a free version that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, but is has a steep learning curve because it is aimed at serious video editing.

I use an old iMac from 2013 with built in iMovie. No fancy effects, but good enough.

For Sunday 2020-05-17 I plan another live stream. This time: Game of Life in x86 Assembler.

Life goes on, even with the Pandemic. However we have some real life casualties, like the late John Horton Conway. Although he was not happy to be mostly associated with the cellular automaton "Game of Life", he acknowledged its importance for mathematics and computer science.
Let's pay a tribute to him by live coding an assembler version and let's try to make it less than 512 bytes, so we could in theory fit it in a boot sector!

Hey everyone,

I thought i'd say hello and let you know about my YouTube channel, which covers retro computers, retro gaming (mainly PC), infosec, open source, gadget reviews and a little bit of popular science every now and again for good measure.

My channel is https://www.youtube.com/alsgeeklab.

The last few weeks I've been doing a top 10 games of the first 10 years of the IBM PC (starting with 1981). I've just released 1986's top 10, check it out and let me know if you agree with my rating! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o3iYBirPwc.

Here's a few other videos you may find interesting:

Anyway, I'd love to hear your feedback on my channel, if any of you have any suggestions for videos let me know what you think and if you want to subscribe, well that'll just be awesome 😀

Have fun 😀

I needed a sound card for my Compaq 486. So I got a SoundBlaster 16 from Ebay. Stupidly I just thought that all ISA SoundBlaster cards work just by setting jumpers and making a tweak to your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Not in this case, it's a Plug n' Play (Vibra) card from 1995, more likely designed for Windows 95 or better.

So I made this video to shows you how to physically install the card into a PC, as well as configure the card with the Creative CTCM tool in DOS to make the card work in Plug n' Play mode. Then there's a demo. Where I play DooM. Of course!
Ever tried to get a jumperless PnP ISA sound blaster card working on DOS? Here's how!

Hey Arne,

I'd be really appreciative if you'd be willing to add my YouTube channel to the list of Vogons Video Channels. I've been YouTubing similar retro stuff for a good while now and I hope that it will be of use to the readers here.

My channel is: https://www.youtube.com/alsgeeklab

I have two retro specific playlists too:
Retro Computing: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLop3s1 … ZrOnrJKAF1e8rtD
Retro Gaming: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLop3s1 … BYsMr-nxs8yZKZG

I really like your stuff, enjoyed watching your recent 'Life' videos - loved the birds chirping in the background too! - very relaxing with your voice!

Cheers,
Alistair

Hey everyone,

Since there are quite a bunch of Vogons that produce a number of instructional, educational or entertaining videos, I think it might deserve a thread of its own, where you can post a link to your newest video, playlist or channel. Instead of cluttering other subforums or having it scattered in multiple threads.

Are you guys ok with that?

I'll start off in a minute with my own channel, and feel free to introduce yourself as well!

Alphabetical list of Vogons Video Channels:

3dfx Aslinger - 3dfx videos

After the 1084S monitor, my Amiga 500 gets an external Gotek USB Floppy Drive emulator. To be able to boot from it, we install a DF0 switcher. Many demos and games on the Amiga can only be booted from the first floppy drive, DF0. The external drive is called DF1. With the switcher we can toggle the external drive to be either DF0 or DF1.

Next up, ROM switcher? 😁

Maybe if I ever get an accelerator card. But honestly: That only makes sense if I wanted to play Frontier or something similar, or maybe the LucasArts games, they are a bit sluggish.
The A500 unexpanded plays lots of games and especially demos just fine. And Kickstart 1.3 is fine for almost all games. Workbench and Kickstart 3.x makes sense if you have an accelerator + harddisk (CF/SD).

Kickstart 2.x and WB 2.x is kind of cool for an unaccelerated A500+ or an unaccelerated A500 with extra chip mem (which can be hacked onto some A500 motherboards).

One thing that gets on my nerves (or grinds my gears as they say) is people selling Second Hand items as Refurbished - and I don't just mean eBayers but professional companies who part exchange items and then just sell them on as Refurbished when they have done nothing to it! REFURBISHED IS NOT THE SAME AS SECOND HAND - I've lost count of how many items I've had to send back to the supplier at work as so-called refurbished items turn up dirty so clearly nothing has been done to refurbish them!

So, in this video I will show you the 8 steps that I take to refurbish a laptop:
