Has anyone tried to do this? I know that "bluetooth to landline" adapters exist that basically give you a traditional landline jack by connecting to your smartphone via Bluetooth. The one I have even works with pulse code dialing, so I can hook up an old rotary dial phone to it, which is pretty sweet.

I wonder if anyone here has tried to do similar things but with PC modems?

It would be nice to have a little thing that plugs into the phone jack on your modem and gives you all the dialing functionality you need by connecting to your smartphone via bluetooth.

Maybe it would be very slow due to audio quality bandwidth limitations, but at least it would work.

I guess this would work. Vintage GSM modems (cellphones with computer link) were able to do 1200Baud to 9600 Baud, maybe 14.400Baud.
Personally, I believe that 9600 baud should be possible and most stable. That was a defacto standard of FAX machines (along with the old 4800 Baud rate).

Why ? Because FAX is one legacy technology that modern VOIP services still care for.
It's also a baud rate well supported in old Windows Terminals and by MODE command on DOS.

I think I'll see if I can do this today. It shouldn't be too hard, right? Just plug one of my retro PCs into my "Bluetooth to landline" adapter.

Anyone know of some things I can try to dial into? I know the r/retrobattlestations BBS has a telephone number I can dial.
