It's almost as though they invented something precisely as annoying as USB-A ...before USB even existed! 😳

You think that's annoying? Try not mixing up the mouse and keyboard PS/2 ports, if they are not color-coded.

I used to have the same problem, but I just recently figured out (magically... in my head) the "red" wire is pin 1... for 20-odd years I never noticed.

I have planned all of my Windows 95-98 retro machines around the original "Tomb Raider," "Turok Dinosaur Hunter," Terminator: SkyNET," and "Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain." I've only played the first few minutes of the games once the PCs have been built. Then the PC gets put away, taken apart, and I wonder "What do I need to put together to get the perfect gaming machine?"

I've gone through this process at least once per year, sometimes more, since 2016.

When I used to work at Best Buy when I was 20 as one of my three jobs, I convinced one of my coworkers I knew what a 486/DX was, when I barely knew what a 486/DX was or how to spell 486/DX.

Don't rely over much on the "red stripe towards the power connector" thing though, it's 95% correct, but that 5% will bite you in the ass, particularly with floppies and more ancient HDDs.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

You're going to get bit in the bum 5% of the time (at least) no matter what you do in an old PC, ha ha...

As a sometime customer, that wouldn't work on me at Best Buy, seems to me the staff can't even read the shelf labels, like Me:"How much RAM has this one got?" BB:"250GB SSD" ... so these days I'm in Best Buy like... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEhHEOIYgMY

I plugged in a DreamBlaster X2 into the auxiliary port of SoundBlaster Live. A quick zap followed, I turned the PC off, and fortunately nothing was damaged. (It's now plugged into an ES1688 board and works great... what a difference quality MIDI makes, but I digress.)

I confess I knew nothing about MIDI before this point, but I have used this forum to get up to speed (Thanks!)

Fortunately, I was based in the TV section where I knew what I was doing to some degree. I never BS'd the customer, though. I suppose that's why I'm not in sales today.

I destroyed a Tualatin Pentium III-S 1.4GHz and the incompatible ABit motherboard it was going to be installed by attempting the wire/pinout modification.

You like fog huh? Perhaps you have scottish inheritance. 😉

I love the fog! It's one of heaviest forms of nostalgia older 3D games offer me.

Confessions demanded ! 🤣

So I was going through some RAM, and I want a confession from whoever created/wanted/was a market for 128MB DDR DIMMs, explain yourself !

"Maxed out" ( 😁 ) K7 with 384M? Back when triple memory slots were a thing...

I prefer FM sound over mt32/gm/sc.

I prefer PC speaker over FM sound.

So do I for certain games. like tongue of the fatman.

FM or pc speaker, for me it's all about getting the stuff to play like back in the good old days. "Better" isn't always better.

Måttfull och balanserad.

I confess! I also have 2 sticks of 128MB DDR (Nanya) PC2700 RAM for use in my Socket 423, 478, or 939 Windows ME builds.

My only defense is I generally don't go over 256MB of RAM for Windows 9x builds, and I want dual channel.

I think the Atari ST soundchip was a failure. Even at the time. What an absolute shame.
Every tune I've ever heard coming out of it has made me regret having ears. Well, except some demoscene stuff.
