So, this is kinda new territory for me. I got one of those MiniPro TL866ii+ programmers and I want to use it to make some BIOS backups to upload to the board here.

I'm using this on Macos and I did an install through Brew from here which seem to work:

When I do:

1minipro --hardware_check

I get the following:

1Found TL886II+ 04.2.86 (0x256)
2Warning: Firmware out of date.
3  Expected:  04.2.122 (0x27a)
4  Found:     04.2.86 (0x256)
5VPP driver pin 1 is OK
6etc.

So, my question is. Where can I find the firmware update for this thing? There seems to be a Chineese website that has Windows installers (I don't have Windows).

As a secondary question. When I insert a rom into the device; how do I detect what type of chip it is?

Didn't try it myself though. I've always updated firmware in windows (I have older TL866A).

Thank you! That worked. I now have firmware version 4.2.126 😀

Regarding my other question; when I insert a rom into the device; how do I detect what type of chip it is?

you do not detect it on the device, you select it from a list and tell the device what it is that you inserted... there is no auto-detection

Ah, that sucks. So that means peeling away stickers to check...? 🙁

I'll be mostly backing up BIOS's. Is there a typical type of chip used for this or is there a wide variety?

You can try guessing the type from the pin count and then try, for example with DIP-28 chips beginning with 27512 and going down to 2764.
But it is always safer to be sure about the chip type.

Some of them have paper stickers that can' t be peeled in one piece, jeez....

Never had one I couldn't get to come up nicely with a razor blade but ok

I remove just the labels. It isnt worth for me to relable them again.
Just put some black electro tape over it and be done with it.

~ At least it can do black and white~
