I think this is reason enough. A 105 gb download is stupid.

I think about those times where we would get bug free disc games, less Internet patches and games were enjoyable offline or by LAN. Now developers release any thing, make players wait and then make a patch fixing bugs

My Flight Simulator install is approaching 200 GB. Graphically it looks amazing and is approaching photorealism.

While I could easily play a much older version of the game, it won't look nearly as good. So I put up with the space requirements and load times, because that's the price of gorgeous graphics.

Well what rly makes me hate is the part that evry game nowdays looks the same and plays the same. Iam missing this end 90s early 2000s vibes where evryone build own engines, own ideas and experimented with gameplay styles....nowdays evryone uses UE or Unity or Cry Engine...then we have some AAA internal Company Engines thats it. And you can see the same Engines are used over and over again even the Art Style changes....but on the other hand we have nowdays a huge nichy Indie market! Which offers nearly evry dream you could imagine in a playable type.

Games were a lot younger back then and technology was still driving gameplay forward.

Possibly other than AR and VR, there really hasn't been much technological innovation in the past 20+ years.

Which is not a problem. You can make drastically different looking games on these engines, all while avoiding the horrors of GPU driver issues, which were oh so common in early 3D days.

They don't make "they don't make them like they used to" threads like they used to.

Anyway let's just cut to the chase and blame Microsoft Xbox for getting the ultracapitalist ball rolling since Xbox Live, belated patch certifications, and mandatory DLC all having normalized among the triple-eh companies. The nice thing though, you have many choices to not submit to their whims with indies you can support easier online than a mail order.

Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013 (on console)and has received numerous multiplayer DLC which is likely why the download is so large.
Ideally you'd be able to only download what you need but Rockstar considers online their bread and butter for GTA so it seems ridiculous to me you'd download the definitive edition and complain.
Play the 2013 or 2015 versions if you want a smaller game.

These threads are always so bad, because people want to hate modern games based on the very, very limited subset they choose to play while avoiding even looking elsewhere.

I must've missed those times. Definitely wasn't between 1980-2022.

I think that these days there are a lot of game developers that just wants to create a game and lacks the required programming skills to create a new engine.

Yep, I cringe every time when I see something like this. It is not like everything was "perfect" back then.

Well, I just clicked download,
and there were no options for a less sizable version.

I have seen games that are 64 kb that have quite amazing graphics. I still think this size is quite ridiculous.

Now it is 18 hours. 😁

Does rolling a custom engine matter though? Building an engine doesn't necessarily mean the game it is used for is going to be interesting or innovative.

The main effect of the availability of engines like Unity, UE, etc., is that it's lowered the barrier for game development. We have far more games being made than have ever been made in the past.

It's Rockstar, that filesize is going to be the least of your problems. Hope you're putting that on a SSD...

My download speed is 1GB per day if I am lucky, so the size is a factor for me.
I have some games in my steam library that I will most likely never play because of the download size.

True, this has allowed the developers to invest more on the story and gameplay.

Hate is such a strong word. Modern games just dont do it for me personally. That is my reason, but I don't hate them I just choose not to play.

That is roughly 24 megabyte an hour.... Are you on dial up or something?
