Just bought this game and installed it but quits seconds after starting. Tried using compatibilty mode for win98 but that didn't help, as well as the texture patch. Can anyone offer any tips to get it going? See my sig for the system specs which runs XP SP2 & dx9.

shouldnt need compatability mode
you running in d3d?
does it run in safemode (game safemode not windows safemode)
try nglide

open up the System.ini file and make the following changes:
Search for GalaxyAudio
Set UseDirectSound=False
Set Use3dHardware=True
Save your changes and exit.

Thanks Davros for responding, this being a less popular game I was worried that there would be minimal feedback. This will be running d3d not 3dfx or glide.
I'll try everything you've listed and post my findings, nglide I'll save for last though. Might try running it on my w98 rig but that's dx7 and the game requires at
least dx8 so rather stick with the XP system.

Is it a CD release or something like GOG?

I've played the CD release a lot on XP and 98 fairly recently. I used D3D mode. Several different old 2001-2006 GPUs from ATI and NV. Athlon 64 mostly I think.

This was a CD "re-release" I think, repackaged under Sold Out Software. Maybe that's the problem I don't know, tried the tips above but to no avail. The weird thing is the
system analysis app that comes with the install shows my cpu speed as -1333 mhz!!! Crazy, and my video/sound cards are not showing up at all, something's screwed up.

Anyways I installed the game on my W98 system and it runs fine just a tad choppy. Probably I could continue tweaking the system config file to get it running on XP but
really don't know where to start. GOG is selling this game for 5.99 for XP so may go that route.

I haven't tried to run that game without glide emulation. I have the original game with dgvoodoo 2 on my windows 10 machine running fine. I also have the GoG version running with nglide on XP, also without issues.

This game is based off the original unreal engine. The D3D renderer doesn't work that well even on period correct hardware. Glide is really the way to go IMO.

Does the GOG version come with nglide already configured?

Yes. There is a config executable in the installation directory you can run. Nglide is configured globally, so if you have it already installed it will just work, but if not GoG will install it with the game. I set mine to run at a higher resolution. With dgvoodoo2 you can configure it on a per game basis I think, and you can do things like disable mip mapping so all of the distant textures use full resolution and some other benefits. dgvoodoo2 requires Dx11 or vulkan I think though, while nglide is dx 9c.

Edit: I want to add that configuring nglide is completely painless. It "just works". Install it and it turns your graphics card into a super charged voodoo card. There is a config exe, it sets all your games globally. Disable the 3dfx water mark and optionally set the internal resolution to your monitors native resolution and you are done.

Tried Nglide to no avail. One thing I noticed was the system utility that came with the install lists my cpu speed as -1315mhz and the OS as windows NT. Also it doesn't even list my video card at all so maybe therein lies the culprit I don't know. This appears to be a UK release sold under a "second hand" brand by the name of Sold Out Software. Something tells me if I got an original release version there wouldn't be any problem.

Oh well, at least it runs under Win98!

You should use the original release without any problems. Because this game is abandon-ware I think there should not be a problem uploading an image on google drive and posting the link if the admins allow it! I just tried mine on an Athon XP and 7800gs and it runs like a champ! It is one of my favorite games - still playing it last year!

I'm interested in building an Athlon XP based system for a high end Win98 rig, you mind listing you're parts so I have an example to go by?

I have 2 builds currently and each one have their advantages and disadvantages!
Common parts for both builds:
Athlon XP 3200
2*1gb DDR400 CAS2 Corsair Ram
Geforce 7800gs
PSU FSP 350w with fat 5v rail common for both systems
HDD: some really slow period correct maxtor drives.

Nforce2: Abit AN7
pros: 1.faster performance in direct x 8 games by around 5-10%; equal performance in direct x 9 games.
2.better audio with Sound storm but this is subjective - I am not an audiophile.
cons: 1. very very picky with the ram - only a particular Corsair kit will work in dual channel!
2.exceptional temperamental with storage units: a WD 500gb will be recognized by the board but Windows installation will fail - better o keep under 250gb for hard drive.
KT880: Abit KW7
pros: 1.works with everything - literally - I put 4 different modules (Corsair, Kingston, Kingmax, Aeneon) and just works; the same for hard drives.
cons: 1.lower performance then nforce2!

We would have a problem with pirated software being posted. 😁 There is no such thing as abandonware.

Not worth it, probably going to spend a "whopping" 5.99 at GOG for an XP compliant version of the game.
