Hi, I am trying to restore my IBM PS/1
It had a harddrive image install of DOS 6.21 and Win-3.1

I wanted to add Network TCP/IP support and a 3com NIC card so I
Tried to upgrade to Win-3.11

I installed Win-3.11 and selected to upgrade the OS.
The install appeared to go well with NO errors.

But when I rebooted I received errors.
I had a few errors complaining about xxx.386 files being missing that where being called by the System.INI file.
I searched the hard-drive and backup original image but could not find the mentioned xxx.386 files.
So I commented out the entries in system.INI.

I also performed a reinstall just to make sure all was well.
The reinstall want well with NO errors.

When I reboot Win-3.11 tries to start but then exits to DOS.
I also receive this error “ Invalid VxD”

Any Ideas on how to fix this ?

For a start it's Windows for Workgroups 3.11 The normal WfW 3.11 wasn't designed to upgrade Windows 3.1/3.11. There was an upgrade package , which was a full Wfw 3.11 release with the first disk altered, for that. It was called Windows for Workgroups Add-On. Either remove your current win3.1 setup and replace it or install Wfw 3.11 to another directory on the same hdd.

You can add networking to plain Windows 3.1/3.11 by using a dos packet driver, the winpacket shim and Trumpet winsock. That is how my 286/12 is set up.

Is the PS/2 in the first posting a 286 or 386 ? 😕

From what I know, Windows 3.0, 3.10, 3.11 and WfW 3.10 can start on a 286 still.
WfW 3.11 requires a 386, though. It lacks the 286 kernel.

It's a PS/1 486. Nothing confusing about it at all.

Yes, I was able to get it going. I just had to edit the System.INI file.
added DEVICE=*vtd

I added TCP32b package for Win3.11 to get Networking going.

Works fine now. Thanks all.

It's a normal full version of Win-3.11-WFW. During the install I was asked if I wanted to replace or upgrade the OS and I chose upgrade option.

That will not have network support. A normal full version of Windows for Workgroups 3.11 does.

So during the install of Win3.11 WFW, if you select to upgrade from 3.1 to 3.11-WFW that will NOT give you Network support ?
Right now I have it kind of hacked up I think.
During the Win3.11-WFW upgrade I was asked to setup networking and I used the TCPIP32b package to add TCPIP to the OS.
In Win3.1 the TCPIP32b package does not work.

Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 are two different products! (think of it as Home and Pro these days) You can not upgrade Windows 3.1 to Windows for Workgroups unless you use the version that was meant for that upgrade path. The normal retail version was not. You need to do a clean install in that case instead.

The Win3.1 to Win3.11 is just half a dozen core file replacements. There is no network support involved. You can get the files from http://www.conradshome.com/win31/ File name is WW0981UD.EXE

Oh, Nice. So which packages and updates do I need to add TCP/IP and Network support in the 3.1 install.
I want it to work like WinNT 3.51

WfW 3.11 gives you that functionality. For plain Win3.1/3.11 as I mentioned earlier you get TCP/IP functionality by using a Dos nic packet driver, winpkt.exe(wich is a shim between Dos and Win 3.X for the packet driver) and TCP/IP winsock such as Trumpet Winsock. You can use WfW telnet and ftp clients in Win3.1/3.11with the winsock installed. Also you run an irc client, use a web browser if you are masocisistic enough, etc. with the winsock installed.
