Hello all,
I am building a "retro" P4 Windows XP system, and I wanted to see if there is a list of Windows XP specific games out there.

I know Quake IV is such game, but I need to expand on that one.

Thanks!

I'd say almost all have issues to various extents. Try and find a winXP game on steam or gog where people aren't complaining it doesn't work on win10. In addition you will have wide-screen issues on most titles so a dedicated winXP box with a 19" lcd is the way to go.

I know quite a few games that have problems running on later OS but run just fine on XP with all the bells and whistles! Some of them predate XP but still run just fine on it. IMHO Windows XP is the most compatible out of all Windows version with all the games I tested. To name a few:
1. Far cry 1 - correct reflections and water simulation only on XP
2. Quake 4 - correct textures only on XP
3. Panzer General 2 - runs fine on 98/ME/2000/XP but simply refuses to start on 10.
4. Diablo 1 hellfire - fully XP compatible but no luck on 10
5. Dark reign 1 - no problem on XP
Just to be clear: modding/deleting/adding something to a particular game to make it run on 10 without all the original content does NOT make it problem free!

Not really what your asking but I'd classify any EAX game as XP. I'm not a fan of Alchemy

Thanks, that’s exactly what I meant:
Not XP specific per se, but *XP period specific*:

When I installed Quake 4, the read me states the *minimum* specification as P4, Windows XP, etc.
That is the kind of game that I I’m looking for.

But these lists are great, thank you!

I expect most of those problems are much more likely to be related to drivers rather than changes to the OS. But then, if the correct drivers are only available for XP, it doesn't make much of a difference whether it is an OS problem or not.

According to Phil’s Computer Lab, anything after 2006, would be better suited on Vista, as they would tend to use DX 10.

Seems to me that I'm still regularly seeing games on Steam that use DX9.

XP was released on 2001, so any game list from 2002 to 2007ish?

The later the game, the more likely it is to run. I would say the XP games that were still likely compatible with Win98, probably from 2002-2005, are most likely to to have issues. But even some Windows vista games will still have issue on Win10, it really depends.
