WinXPSP3 w/o the POSReady hack. WindowsMedia Player 11.
KB2780091 is installed so quartz.dll is latest.
The trouble: WMP11 crashes if I try to play *.avi with CVID or CRAM codecs. AppName: wmplayer.exe, AppVer: 11.0.5721.5145, ModName: quartz.dll, ModVer: 6.5.2600.6333 , Offset: 00096276.
If I restore quartz.dll to the unpatched version (6.5.2600.5512 from 14 Apr 2008) the result is similar.
The last DX version of quartz.dll (6.5.1.902 from 30 May 2003) works ok but MSUpdate constantly try to replace this version.

Any suggestions please?

P.S. Have installed the fresh copy of WinXPSP3 Pro VL. WMP11 + 3 KBs for quartz.dll. CRAM and CVID play in WMP11, there is no crash. WtF?

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

well i've never heard of either of those codecs, but I don't see any reason to use WMP or pot player these days.

CVID is Cinepak.
CRAM is MS Video1.
Win9x era games have used both often.
About WMP11. I have used it as a test tool for DirectShow. My everyday player is MPC-HC.

Hmm... Interesting...
Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0. All internal filters are disabled (so only OS codecs and splitters will be used). CRAM and CVID are played correctly.
If I check the Source filters/AVI checkbox -- the file is loaded and the length is correct but the play button not works.
MPC-HC works with both options (checked and unchecked) but it uses LAV Splitter.

Update:
1) MPC 6.4.9.0 plays CVID and CRAM *.avi files w/o crashes/bugs. With and without the internal AVI splitter. Except "Actua Golf 2" ones. 4 files: 2 CVID and 2 CRAM. *Censored*.
Is the MPC AVI splitter has known limitations?
2) Looks like WMP11 fails if an VFW codec is used. CVID, CRAM, IV32. I will continue the search.
