VOGONS

Hi everyone,
I've recently got hold of an original copy of Blue Shift and I would like to run it on 3dfx mode with my voodoo2 sli.
Now the game states that it does not support the voodoo2 and in this case I should run it in D3D. And I indeed get the message that the selected OpenGL mode are not supported by ypur video card.
I have wickedGL installed but blue shift is not on the list.
But isn't Blue Shift a variant the same engine as the original Half Life?
Has anyone got it to work on Blue Shift?

i'm not sure, but could it have something to do with the hi-def pack? did you try with that on/off? i'd also try installing the 1.0.0.1 patch for blue shift. what are the exact reasons for not just going with d3d anyway?

it's mildly interesting that they recommend to actually use d3d on these old 3dfx cards because if memory serves, in the readme for uplink (and maybe even the original release) they say to use the 3dfx minigl for v1/v2 and explicitly state that d3d is not supported on those cards, but then again three years passed in the meantime.

There is no 3Dfx mode, what you are trying to run is the OpenGL renderer using the 3Dfx miniGL driver.

I'm not really sure you need the MiniGL for Voodoo2 SLI, but just in case, try updating it using either version 1.47 or the latest one, 1.49.
If using the MiniGL driver keeps producing the same error, try running it without it, just use the OpenGL ICD that should be installed when using the latest drivers for Voodoo2 cards.

Is the rest of your system the one your signature? If so, then using both a Voodoo5 and Voodoo2 cards could complicate manners a bit. I've never tried such a combo, so I have no real comment on .dll switching and the like. WickedGL further complicates things and I'm not really sure you really need it. I haven't used it since ~2009 or so, if I recall it's a faster MiniGL driver, right? Does it supplant the OpenGL ICD driver in the system? If so, it could be causing you all sorts of headaches.

Well the difference between 3dfx mini driver and d3d is that with the first one on half-life my fps are pinned on 99fps and this never changes during the game. On D3d I have framedrops down to 45fps (still really playable) but if it is possible, I'd prefer the mini driver.

But what Garrett W says, makes a lot of sense. Since there is no 3dfx splash screen either. I will try to run some comparisants in performance on the earlier released HL and HL:OF between de mini driver and default openGL and D3D.

And yes, It sometimes is a pain in the butt to run the voodoo 5 next to the vd2 sli, but it is manageble.

Builds:

Xp3000+ gf3 ti200 + vd2 SLI 12MB + 768MB + SB live @ WinXP & 98 Dualboot.

P2 350mhz + Diamond Viper V550 + 3Dfx Voodoo 2 12MB + AWE64 + 128MB SDR @ msdos / win98.

Try this:

Copy 3dfxgl.dll from the /gldrv directory to the main game directory.
Rename it opengl32.dll.
Select default OpenGL driver in setup.

This worked great for me. Blue Shift with Voodoo3 2000 kept giving me this error until i followed your steps!

Funnily enough it worked for me initially, but, after advancing in the game, at one level transition it started to crash. When trying to enter the settings so I can select the Voodoo 2 SLI Opengl driver, it pops the "selected opengl mode is not supported by video card" message.
The point where it occurs: when I escort the scientist after the elevator hidden behind a breakable wall. After this, there's a loading point, after which the game crashes no matter what with the 3dfx mini driver.
When I select D3D, the Geforce 2 in the PC takes over it runs perfectly, but I wanted to use my V2 SLI all the way (had no problems with HL and Opposing Force).

I'm playing through Blue Shift at the moment on my V2 SLI box and I'm so far not having any issues with the above fix, but I haven't gotten as far as you FoxiestFox. Will report back if I get the same problem.

When I played it last week I noticed if I pressed esc during the game then the menu didn't show, it was stuck on a still image of the game.

Thanks, I'm curious if you'll face the same issue or not.
Never had that bug you mentioned there... but I instead had a lot of audio bugs because I tried to "fix" HL's bugged A3D 2.0 implementation with its muffled gun sounds and bugged reverb, but I couldn't do it even with the parameters I found here on Vogons. Sadge.
So I just tossed the Vortex 2 card out of the PC and swapped a Live in its place... now at least I have god tier reverb. 😁

I don't think I have too much left of the game (I completely missed Blue Shift back then so this is my first play actually) so I just stick with D3D for the rest of it, too hyped to keep experimenting with the video drivers.

I played blueshift when it first came out it literally took me like 2 hours to finish. I returned it to the store and got my money back. Yes you use to be able to do that if you didnt like the product back in the day.

I recall you could return opened software as well. though I loved Blue Shift so much even though it was short , I wouldnt return it. Plus I think I got it on sale so I wasnt very bothered. I really need to play the trilogy again

Same for me, crash happened at the hidden elevator.

I finished the game with software rendering 😁

No accounting for taste. I've played Blue Shift to completion about five times now (in the last year) and enjoyed it quite a bit.

The fact that they were asking $50.00 for that at release was a joke.

You have a point there, that's quite a bit of money.

Can confirm, same issue for me. Game crashes after the elevator reaches the bottom and it loads the next level 🙁

Edit: good news! You can switch back to OpenGL after you get past the point that crashes. Although, it will crash again when you enter the portal to get back from Zen, if not before. I discovered this while getting stuck in a stupid underwater tunnel on Zen, because a) D3D mode is so god damn dark, and b) it wasn't rendering some of the illuminated crystals for some reason so I couldn't see anything at all.

Anyway that might help others too. Get past the crash using software/D3D, then switch back to lovely lovely OpenGL 😁

No they weren't. It was priced as an expansion pack, ~25$-30$ depending on where you lived and if it came packed with Opposing Force.

Well, I suppose its up to my memory to recount it, pretty sure it was 50.00. Even if it wasn't 25-30 is still overpriced for a 2 hour garbage game. The game was a terrible cash in at any price.

" GameSpot reviewer Greg Kasavin agreed with many of IGN's criticisms, stating that "it's not that the game is easy so much that it's extremely short" and that Blue Shift "doesn't amount to much on its own terms"."
