Can't you use the context menu?

I can, but it's not particularly helpful in this instance.

edit: My suspicion is that that Unofficial 3.65 Main Updates broke Windows Explorer.

I was recently doing a fresh reinstall of Windows 98SE on my Compaq Armada 1750. I don't quite know what I did wrong, but C:\Windows is inaccessible and the text which normally allows me to unlock it is nonexistent.

Here's how the installation went so far:
01. Windows 98 SE
02. Microsoft Plus! 98
03. DirectX 9.0C Unofficial
04. ATI Rage j5-30-1-b02 drivers
05. Internet Explorer 6
06. Windows Media Player 9
07. Windows Media Player 9 kb891122
08. U98SESP3.65 (Main Updates/core files only)

Around here a fresh install is defined as only step 1. If you are having problems it's becasue it's not a fresh install at all it's a molested 98 install is what you have there.

That was definitely the case. The problem was 3.65 breaking Internet Explorer. Installing 3.66 fixed that issue but brought others.

The moral of the story is to not use the Unofficial 3.xx service packs, if using any unofficial service packs at all.
