Hello folks. Recently I picked up a Unisys CWD-4002, and a Audician 32+ sound card to go with it. And judging by some other threads, I'm not the only one either 😀. However, I'm having some reliability issues with the card/machine combination.

The card itself appears fine, and seemed to work pefectly when I tested it in my other retro PC (Pentium III era). However, in the machine I bought it for, I see some intermittant failures. Sometimes digital sound works, but FM does not. Sometimes I get the reverse. MIDI works sometimes and not others either. Occasionally, the setupsa application even says 'OPL3-SAx board not present!', but that's more rare than the partial working scenarios.

So I'm thinking there's something going on with connectivity with the ISA card, especially since it is hooked up via a riser. However, I've cleaned the contacts on both the card and riser and reseated both a couple times to hopefully 'clean' the sockets. I did at one point manage to fit my AWE64 in the Unisys machine and had reliability issues with that TOO, so it certainly points to the ISA slot on the Unisys.

However, I'm not entirely sure what to do to isolate it further and/or fix it. I'm guessing it's time to do continuity testing between the card and bottom socket? Any other suggestions?

My system config, for reference, is:

Autoexec.bat

PROMPT $P$G
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS;C:\APPS;C:\APPS\INFOZIP
SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4
C:\OPL3SAX\SETUPSA.EXE /S
C:\DRIVERS\CTMOUSE\CTMOUSE.EXE

Config.sys

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
FILES=30
STACKS=9,256

That's the PNP-Bios in combination with the LAN and the Soundcard... it's really hard to get it working stable. You have to use Intel ICU PNP manager and force the settings, otherwise the machine will behave like you have described.

But I had to admit, that this worked for me until now 🙁
Now that shitty fucking shit thing does not find the audiodrive anymore. esscfg says disabled in bios or icu.
I have not disabled anything, I only made a cold reboot and now, no sound at all. None in Dos, Win95, NT351 and OS2 Warp.
What is that? It's arghh! This tiny little thing is shit. It's not reliable, perhaps because of VIA and PNP...don't know.

No fun with that thing. Better searching for another machine.

I hope you know that ESSCFG can not (and should not) be used when a PNP BIOS is present or after Win9x or any other PNP capable OS has been booted. When you have PNP in any form, don't use ESSCFG.

I spent hours with this thing... it worked nice until now.

No I never heard about that. ESSCFG reads the PNP-vaules and configures the card right, but now the PNP bios has deactivated the card and so no input for esscfg.

ESSCFG should fail if the card has been set up by PNP already. Otherwise, something is very wrong.

are you sure about that? ESSCFG with values leads to an info, that the values will be ignored and the PNP config will be used.

After I finally managed to get it to work in dos (ICU found the Audiodrive). It was installed with A220 I5 D1;0 330.
I manually installed the card in win95 and it was configured with A220 I5 D1;3 330.
The reboot in Dos configured the card in esscfg also for A220 I5 D1;3 330. Everything was OK. It worked for many
reboots in Dos and Windows. But after a shutdown and a cold reboot everything was gone, no audiodrive at all,
none in Dos and none in Win95. Totally frustrating. I changed the ICU many times, no Audiodrive anymore.
Totally 30+ hours for nothing.
