I own a sony notebook PCG-F305 and the sound is perfectly running with Windows 98.
But to play DOS games with soundblaster, I need also a fitting DOS Driver.
The PCI Sniffer detected the following soundcard:
NeoMagic Corp. NM2200 MagicMedia 256AV
The Report with further details is attached.
Does Anybody know if there has ever been a DOS driver for that device?
Of course it must be a PCI soundcard driver.

You'll probably need to install Win9x.

Windows 98 is already installed. I often heard that you can run games "within" Windows, so that the sound is emulated by windows. But if I start games via the DOS prompt out of windows, the screen switches to full screen and the game isn't running within a Windows-window any more. What's the difference between the windows intern DOS promt and to shut down the windows session and start in DOS mode?

You need a motherboard and sound card with an SB-link. E.g. I have an AOpen motherboard (the AX6B, an ATX board) that has the connector (6 pin). I have plenty of PCI sound cards but none have the SB-link (or haven't provisioned the header). I have always been surprised that the SB Live doesn't have it.

I don't remember the details but it's an IRQ thing that doesn't work on PCI and it's this that the SB-link is supposed to solve. Google around for some more info.

List of motherboards with SB-link (PC/PCI) header

Edit:

E.g, this AOPEN Yamaha XG YMF744 PCI Sound Card has the space but not the header provisioned. It's the 6 pin connector space in the bottom right corner labelled PC_PCI.

There is no DOS sound driver for that sound chip as far as I am aware. IF you are able to give me the file names of the drivers for the laptop (that sony had on their ftp before they took it down), I can get you the drivers that were for that laptop.

Or you can download the whole FTP archive from here:
https://archive.org/details/ftp.vaio-link.com

Your only real option for real DOS sound is a PCMCIA sound card that has full DOS support or a parallel port sound card that had full DOS support (adlib and soundblaster)

The attached driver added Sound Blaster Emulation:

But how do I get the sound emulation to work in DOS games?

I added the following line to autoexec.bat:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1

but I got no sound or sound effect in any game I tried (DeathRally, CyberSphere, Carnage)

Edit 5/27/19: Without changing configuration the sound is fully working in "Archimedean Dynasty (Schleichfahrt)". This game have an auto-detecting sound setup. I also tried "CyberMage" and the sound in the intro works fine. But by starting a game at the title screen the program crashes.

Oh good, you DID register and start posting. 😀

Told you VOGONS might be helpful, even if not necessarily giving you the answer you wanted to hear 😀

Awesome, that you remember me! Thank you for your advice.
This forum is quite helpful. And indeed, it's not easy to find a propriate answer.
But I made progress with this soundcard issue:
Some games now HAVE sound effects. But no MIDI, at all.
