Here's a fun project I really wanted to do since many years, and took a long time
and many different prototypes. But now I have the result I am very happy with :
I designed 2 custom music box songs ("Larry" and "Monkey"), and had a small batch of each mechanism manufactured.
Add to this a nice 3d printed MT32 style enclosure, and we have : MB-32 : Music Box 32 !

MB-32 will be available here : https://www.serdashop.com/MB32
Perfect as a desktop gadget for annoying colleagues at work 🤣
PM me if you like to design an alternative (Christmas?) enclosure for the mechanism ?

Well...
For some time I've been thinking about a "mechanical synthesizer", though somewhat different...
My approach would be a MIDI-connected robot playing on real musical intruments.
Or perhaps such a thing has already been done?

Żywotwór planetarny, jego gnijące błoto, jest świtem egzystencji, fazą wstępną, i wyłoni się z krwawych ciastomózgowych miedź miłująca...

YESSS! YESSS! YESSS!
Just add MIDI interface with MT-32 compatible instrument mapping, and play some late-80s/early-90s games, with those robots playing the soundtrack!

Well, that is appropriately crazy. However, a digitally controlled synthesizer using mechanical sound elements isn't terribly new.

I guess we'll just wait for someone to make a pipe organ played by a bunch of robots pumping bellows in front of the audience.

(Regarding OP): Do these have the buffer overflow bug?

Yea, if you crank them too fast, the music locks up 😀

I just rec'd the "Monkey" version of the MB-32 in the mail and listening to it brought me some joy today. Some of y'all may think of it as a novelty -- and you'd be right -- but I grew up w/a music box in the home, so this li'l box helped me recall some pleasant childhood memories. Plus, it's just cool. And since it fits in the palm of your hand, it also won't take up much space in your home or office.

Heh. Come to think of it, it also brings back memories of when I put together a fun Super Fighter animation in Mario Paint (here), all the way back in 2001 [!]. The similarity being that there was only enough room in RAM for about 1/3 of the music. That little project took forever, and looking back on it the graphics I made were subpar, but I really enjoyed all the hours spent working on it.

Hi,

I'm working on an 'upgrade' sticker for MB-32 Xmas edition :
It will 'turn MB-32 on' permanently 🤣

Some early experiments :

simple sticker print

Due to the aspect ratio of MB-32, 2 line text is probably more suitable .

and more glow, different font,... ?

Your votes/suggestions are welcome !
- What should the 'Larry' MB-32 show ?
- What should the 'Monkey Island' MB-32 show ?
- Or maybe 1 unified 'MT-32' system screen sticker for both ?

This is hilarious.

Now all we need is a version that can interface with a MIDI port and will reconfigure itself for the song you want to play.
