as long as there are no conflicts like all other hardware out there the soundcard will work just fine
no worries all will get 😀

it has been very busy time with work and real-life sorry for the lack of updates and replies, I simply cannot mess seriously with stuff atm
marmes is the same, extra shifts and work for xmas time...

Man, I really picked a good time to start exploring DOS games. I've already got a Sound Blaster Pro 2 but this looks like it'll do everything it does and then some.

Quick question technical question: if I run this alongside a GUS Max, which also has a CS4231, this shouldn't cause any immediate conflicts since the GUS Max chip is on a different IO port range, right? Just by looking at the MobyGames WSS list it looks like there are plenty of games that support WSS but not GUS Max, so this still has a place in my primary early DOS machine, alongside FMonster when it's ready 😁

WSS and - much more commonly - SBPro2. FMonster doesn't do SB digital audio, GUS needs SBOS, which is at best a complete pain in the arse and at worst simply doesn't work. For all the stuff without WSS or GUS support, having something that just does SB DA well in hardware is a lifesaver (or at least something to stop your hairs going greyer than they already are).

OK here are a couple of quick recordings , the audio caps in use still need some hrs to stabilize though... things are very clear as you will hear, I don't know if that's a bad or good thing after decades of SB filtering 🤣

these are simple 320kbps mp3 recordings from soundcard to modern pc soundcard, no fancy equipment or anything similar... if you think a better way (or flac?) is needed then comment please , I want all opinions good or bad

Hello!
I did find the same static with other card, maybe it's the version I have. I seen videos on YouTube with same static, same place. We will make more tests. We also found that some things sound very clear now.

MI1 sound really nice 😀

Is it just me or is DOTT a bit staticky from 0:22 for about 5 seconds....not single cycle DMA noise is it?

my DOTT makes the same noises, on the SB Pro and the AWE64 (both of which are known to be free of the single cycle DMA bug)

No card is 'free' of the single cycle DMA click. And it's not really a bug. It's just a design flaw.
That is, you cannot start a new DMA buffer fast enough, so you always get a glitch between two buffers, when you try to play continuously (ie buffers larger than 64k).
The DSP simply cannot process the new command fast enough. The thing is that the SB16's DSP is slower than the previous SB's with this command, so it's even slower at starting a new buffer, making the click more obvious.

But only if the code actually uses a different command (which wasn't introduced until the DSP 2.00 version, so early software won't use it at all, because it didn't exist, and later software may choose to still use DSP 1.x-compatible code, lowest common denominator and all), can you actually get rid of the click. DOTT doesn't use this, so it will always click somewhat.
I explained all that in a blog here: https://scalibq.wordpress.com/2017/03/12/dma-activation/

Not true since not every card uses DMA for sampling (e.g. Ultrasound).

No shit Sherlock.
We were talking about single cycle DMA transfers on SB compatible cards.

Hi Keropi.

Here are a few bullet points I test with clone SBPro2 cards:

  • Balance between PCM and FM (OPL3).
  • Lowpass Filtering.
  • Stereo flip, Correct L/R panning, Mono switch.
  • Mixer steps behavior.

In my testing a 'good' clone will pass all these tests,, everything else is a bonus.
Same thing applies to all other modern SB2/Pro2 clones.

Thanks for the input James-F , need to see how I can test these things now as I have no idea how the CS4237 supports them

I will admit shamefully that I have nothing Orpheus-related this last week , xmas time caught up with me! 🤣 🤣 🤣
But the next pcbs have been ordered with reviced ports and AC'97 header so at least that happened 😎
If anyone has a clue what games/software to use in order to test James-F's recommendations please write about it. (I have talked to James-F some time ago and his interest is now shifted to other things, I don't want to bother him more with pc stuff as he is doing great things in other retro platforms 😊 )

To test stereo reverse issue:
Duke Nukem 3D has a sound test in setup.exe, Left and Right should be CORRECT when choosing SBPro as the sound card in that setup.
This thread (go to summary):
SBPro1 CT1330A, lets solve the Reversed Stereo myth!

Balance between PCM and FM:
Record Prince of Persia 2 and Gods intros, and compare with the recording in my signature.
Some clone sound card will have FM way louder than it should.
And here:
Re: FM and PCM Volume Balance of SB Cards

Lowpass filtering:
Record Doom weapon 4 shooting straight for 15 seconds,, without music (turn down to zero in menu).
When I have a recording of that, I can do spectrum analysis.
