Yes, that's the problem. In my Celeron 566 system with similar VIA chipset board, these OPTi cards without proper oscillator behave the same.

You can solve it if you have some soldering skills:

For MED3931 card:

1- Remove R1 SMD resistor
2- Add a 14.318 Mhz crystal oscillator to X1

Optionally, you can add ~10pF SMD capacitors to C9 and C10

Problem solved 😀

No problem then. I do not need to make it work in this PC, I just wanted to report in case there was a compatibility problem with unisound. Will re-test this card later though with a slower machine. Thank you!

Please add PnpID [MDK1605] - this is Highscreen Soundboostar 16 - card based on AD1816AJS chip.

Do you plan on adding support for the OPTi 82c929a chipset in the future?

This is actually one of the good OPTi chipsets.
It should also be well documented - the source code for new drivers is available here:

I already contacted JazeFox for this (I have a bunch of them) and said that OPTi82C929A arent PnP so he cant/wont support them for the moment.
JazeFox respose: Re: Universal ISA PnP Sound Card Enabler for DOS v0.71c (UNISOUND)
Anyway, nice find, didnt know that driver existed. Thanks!

@JazeFox
Ok, I tested a new batch of cards:
-ALS120, ES1868F and proper OPTi 82C931 (with a 14.318 Mhz crystal oscillator), all worked great.

I had problems with 2 cards, both with Crystal CX4235-XQ3 chip.
-1st one (generic) appears to be non-pnp so I cant seem to initialize it with Unisound
-2nd one (Genius) its a PnP card, it gets initialized, but I can't get ANY sound on any game. What could be the problem? Do you need a dumpp?

EDIT: all Crystal CX4235-XQ3 cards are dead...

Thanks for reporting. I had some ID additions ready for 0.72b (including yours) but I forgot to add them at the end. They'll be added in the next version.

Wow, it seems you have a lot of cards for testing!

I sent a PM to you.

I need to go ahead and test out a bunch of my sound cards.

Is there any specific cards that still need to be tested? If so, and I have any of them, I'll test those first.

If not, I'll just test everything and report back as I test them.

I don't see any ESS card in those dumps. I only see an Aztech 2320 card there.
What ESS chip is mounted in your board?

That text file contains the card info, ES1869.
Esscfg works fine.
What is strange about this system is that disabling devices in the bios still means windows sees them, but can't assign resources. You have to 'hide' them in the security settings to completely hide them from Windows.

When you say "isn't detected", what's exactly the issue? Unisound does not detect PnP cards or does it say it's not supported / it's and unknown card? The same behaviour happens with the ESS audio enabled or disabled in BIOS?

If no PnP card is detected, it could be because the built-in ESS is only presented by the BIOS as a PnP BIOS node (now I see it as such in that TXT dump). As Unisound does not use BIOS calls (it does direct ISA communication only,), that can be the cause.

UniSound does not detect any PnP cards. Enabling/disabling in the BIOS doesn't change the behavior. I guess your explanation makes sense.

@JazeFox, thanks a bunch for this amazingly useful tool! I had all kinds of problems with Crystal's own DOS drivers, but your tool works like a charm with my CX4237.

Indeed, used it for the first time today on a PNP SB AWE32 - what a bliss! Detected, initialized and simply worked after that. An awesome tool, thanks!

Just to be sure, here's a dump with the card fully configured and playing sfx in Doom.

Hi there!

I am new user of this forum. I read it over the years but I thought I had nothing to contribute, until now (I hope) .

I made a DOS tool for my own use some months ago, but now I decided to release it, because I think it may be useful for someone else, so here it is:

It is called "Unisound", or Universal ISA PnP Sound Card Enabler for DOS. Current version is: v0.72b (Download link at the end of this post).

Hi JazeFox, many thanks for making this tool. I'm getting back in to ISA sound cards, and it's a real boon to have this unified driver available for DOS.

I am having problems finding working DOS drivers for my AD1816JS + YMF704C-S based ISA card. It is a rare card called "Gallant SC70P PLUS". The Device Id is AXS7180.

I had noticed in your version update v0.71c
- Enable on-board WaveTable sound on AD181x cards with YMF704/QS1000 WT ICs

It seems UNISOUND may (?) already have the foundation in place, to support my card. However, currently UNISOUND says my card is unsupported ("Not compatible yet"), and will not load. Could you possibly help please?

Yes, it's confirmed, it's the same as before (sorry for the delay). Nothing to do there.
