Hi,

I almost completed my 2019/2020 task of getting all three computers of my youth - ATARI 800xl with 1050 floppy, Commodore C128d and...
...my first PC ever - the ATARI PC4, 286 with 16MHz, NEAT Chipset, VGA, SCSI and 4MB RAM.

The original - now 30 years old - Seagate 66MB SCSI is still working but I´m frightend that the HDD wil die - I´ll need to think about a replacement device like SCSI2SD.

But my question for this topic is...
What would be the "best" sound card for the ATARI 286?

Best in terms of:
- Original (year of introduction) -> I had an original Adlib in 1990
- Price/Value -> an original Adlib is incredibly expensive nowadays
- Usability -> Sound Blaster 16 are cheap but do they still work in a 286 based system?
- Compability -> I´m only using old DOS games till 1991/2 as newer ones will probably not work and the 286 should be as original as possible... 😀

What would you recommend?
I found a CT2890 for a decent price (<20 Euro) - to new but maybe a good compromise...?

Cheers,
Oliver

maybe a BlasterBoard? BLASTERBOARD : A new SB 2.0-compatible ISA sound card
something similar to the SB2.0 will work nicely

Yes, a Sound Blaster 16 or Vibra16 can be used in a 286 and even give 16-bit audio in the diagnostic program. I've tested both. Good luck finding a game that will run on a 286 and can also use 16-bit samples, though. I'd much prefer an OG Sound Blaster, but an Vibra16 is what's in my (still currently very flakey) 286 and it works.

Or go for an NX (Pro) or SG Basic 16 for Covox/DSS support - which fits the time period nicely. Also they tend to be cheaper than the BX2 for some reason...

If you want a cheap card, Yamaha ISA PnP sound cards are good.

Use Unisound off this website to initialize the PNP and makes a pretty damn good substitute for sound blaster 2.0. Clean output and real OPL3 output.

The best card IMO for these 286's would be Soundblaster 2.0, but they are expensive now.

As long as SB16 also work in 8bit it is not a problem.

The only problem is the missing Stereo for WorlfD

Or missing Stereo at all, as it won't do that in SB Pro mode either. Better get an SB Pro 2.0 then.

I get stereo sound in wolf3d with my CT1330A SB Pro

It was about the SB16 not doing Stereo...

Also, Wolf3D has no Stereo sound. It's using panning, which is something completely different. Stereo refers to the ability to play two separate channels at the same time, one for a left and one for a right speaker. Panning is just a volume-level adjustment of a channel to make it appear more to the left or to the right.

Yes, because it was about the SB16 not doing Stereo.

I remember recently testing an ALS007 (SB16 clone) on wolf3d and got stereo SFX as well. Haven't tried a genuine SB16 recently enough to remember for certain

There's someone on eBay selling Adlib clones made by Sun Moon Star for a reasonable price. I ordered one but don't have it yet and can't say how well it works.

Please post photos of the Atari 286 if you get a chance!

I saw those recently and my interest was piqued. Let us know how it is please

BTW just tried wolf3d on a CT1740 SB16, SFX were in stereo

That looks like the same as one I built recently. It's a very easy build (low component count, all through-hole), the only challenge was finding the not very 2019-standard pot. Sounds great in any event. I'd recommend building it yourself - if I can do it, anyone can 😉

Not a solid test.

Wolf3d stereo is achieved by panning the mixer. It works with any stereo sound blaster including SB16 cards.

Everything to do with sound cards on a 286, not perpetuating myths about Wolf3d stereo sound.

you said "not a solid test" I'm asking: a solid test of what?

only reason I even mentioned wolf3d is because some other guy kept on about how you don't get stereo on this or that
