With all the talk of this Dream bank being directly derived from the Sound Canvas sound set, I am curious. There is one file that I have noticed only sounds the way it should on Roland devices (among brands in common use with 90s PCs), so if anyone with access to a prototype would be willing to give the attached file a try, we will find out if it's as close to Roland's implementation as some (even old magazines) have claimed.

It is worth noting that I have no Yamaha devices to try, so they may get the right sound out of it too. The X2 with its default bank is among those that do not. There are no tricks or obscure features in use here; just particular instruments in the Roland map that many other cards left out altogether or recorded differently.

EDIT: Fixed the sloppy attachment. I also wanted to mention that the file does play on most devices; it's just missing instruments, producing sub-optimal sound.

I would be interested to hear this through Yamaha XG as well as the aforementioned in Roland mode. I shall test this.

Just bought one on serdashop! This will work with the CHiLL external waveblaster interface right? Want to leave the X2 on my YMF-719 and I'm not sure this would fit there anyway.

yes it works perfectly fine with the CHiLL board!

I got mine today and it sounds really good.

I tried a whole slew of games with different styles of music (Doom (2), Rise of the Triad, Descent, Theme Hospital, Colonization, UFO: Enemy Unknown, Transport Tycoon, Duke Nukem 3D and SimCity 2000) and I really liked how everything sounds.

My ears aren't tuned enough to recognize sounds from other MIDI modules but I think that (some? most?) instruments are quite different from a SC-55/SC-88. I should make recordings and compare 😀

Received mine yesterday, as well as the Crystal Blaster C1. Both sound amazing. Serdaco did a great job again 😀

I am probably going to order one or the other myself but I can't seem to decide 🤣.

now that the Yucatan is out there let's not forget Tiido's distortion fix - a small program to lower output volume so there is no sound clipping: Dream SAM9733 and SAM9407 based MIDI devices distortion fix
I think it's a must to have on autoexec.bat if your system has a Yucatan/Cancun/Diamond GS daughterboard

+1 to that .

I use a Dreamblaster X2 now, so I no longer have that issue, but when I had a Monster MIDI, it would hopelessly distort without Tiido's distortion fix to tame it and I had it installed on an a card meant for the already loud DB60XG .

EDIT : The fix is supposed to address clipping in the digital domain, before the daughterboard's DAC, however, in my case I was getting clipping at ADC on my soundcard's line-in (to which waveblester connector is wired) and I had no way to attenuate the signal in the analogue domain before it reached the ADC .

No, it will not work with chill n phil. Yucatan FX needs the +12V, and chill n phil only has 5V.
It works fine with the larger CHiLL adapter : https://www.serdashop.com/CHiLL

This comes just as I'm about to gift me something nice for the holidays, but I'm still a bit undecided whether it will be a X2 or a Yucatan FX. I aim for the closest experience to a SCB-55 but I find the prices for the actual thing a bit steep these days. I've listened all the demos of Yucatan FX I could find, I know it's not the same as Roland SC but it has the "SC vibe" as someone said earlier.

So my question would be, go for the Yucatan FX or is there another product (X2+custom soundbanks, or the upcoming X8) in Serdaco's portfolio that would closer emulate the SoundCanvas?
