I would say, that FM sounds "right" to your (and mine as well, since I definitely didn't have any waveblaster card in past) ears, but not necessarily better. When I play Warcraft 2 today, I remember FM music clearly, but man, General MIDI through X2 sounds out of this world good!

Yeah, there's no arguing that General Midi is objectively better sounding than FM or PC speakers. 😀 Just like a 32-bit/96kHz FLAC recording of a real orchestra would be objectively much better than General Midi. The question is... would you really want that? Can't speak for everybody else, but to me a big part of this hobby is related to nostalgia... and when it comes to nostalgia, "better" is an abstract concept 😀

The thing is (at least on my side), that I like to relive those old games in a best way possible. Therefore I'm glad, that with today's options, I have much more powerful HW, and games are running with great speed. And also I like to experience games with best possible sound possible (MT-32, General MIDI), because back then I definitely didn't have a these devices in my possession. And in most cases, I like what I'm hearing with those devices (although there are some exceptions, of course).

That's a fair point as well, and I can relate to it. It's like me and the Voodoo cards 😀 Never had a Voodoo card back in the day (even though I badly wanted one), so now I have dozens 😀
