Good luck finding one. I saw one boxed on ebay UK about a year ago. It sold for around £3,000 if I remember well.

You'd be better of getting MT32-Pi or upcoming WP32 McCake from Serdaco.

I was able to get one around a year or so ago by trading a decent amount of other hardware for it.

They very rarely pop up on eBay. I see one sold listing about 2.5 months ago. Went for about $1,500.

Personally I would never pay that much. A CM32L, CM64, or CM-500 external device will cover what the LAPC-I does at way less cost.

Then all you need is either an intelligent mode MPU-401 port or a UART port with SoftMPU.

I get the feels thing but lapcs go for stupid amounts. And as far as I'm aware the lapc is basically a cm32l on a isa card , it more or less has the same control , reverb and la synthesis chips.

We are just telling you this because its easier and cheaper to get your hands on something like a cm64 than the lapc which happens to a be a collectors unicorn.

Jeez...my unicorn needs to be taken out of the stable I guess, haven't used it in ages.

Hah.. me either. I will be building a system to keep it in in the hopefully not too distant future.

Thank you for the feedback. I didn't know of Serdaco's project yet, a valuable hint ... I must admit I am tempted ... but so much high-tech in a retro-PC, I don't know. Already the neighbouring AWE64 Gold anno '96 feels a little out of place, as my DX4 is designed to match with '95, but the AWE64 indeed was my sound card back then, so that's about feelings also.

Obviously the CM-32L is the (ugly) alternative. I already ordered one from Japan along with a PCMIDI / Music Quest clone by Edro and Leo, but it will need retro-brighting. Also this dongle-cabling-mess does not quite match with my preference of a one-box-machine.

Nevertheless, I will not give up on the LAPC-I. Should one of your beloved unicorns long for a tapestry change, over here it is just as homely with a caring stable boy (and fan girls) so it wouldn't collect any dust 😉

Lucky me found a Russian collector of old sound cards. As he was just about to disband his collection, he sold off to me four sound cards with their original boxes and accessories:

• Roland LAPC-I
• Roland SCC-1
• Yamaha SW-60XG
• Turtle Beach Tropez Plus

I have carefully cleaned the LAPC-I and the SCC-1 and integrated both into my retro-PC along with an Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold. The outputs of those three sound cards go to a high quality sound mixer. All three cards work perfectly fine and give crystal clear sound without any audible noise. In case you are interested, have a look at the high-res pictures below.

I have not decided yet if I keep the AWE64 or if I use the Turtle Beach Tropez instead, as the Tropez has an OPL3 whereas the AWE does not. Maybe I also add the Yamaha later, as the SW-60XG sounds better than the SCC-1 in certain games. But then I would need a new sound mixer with 4 inputs instead of 3.

So here they are, the two unicorns, in my stables. You cannot imagine how happy I am to play my favorite old DOS games with native Roland MT-32 and Sound Canvas music 😀

This retro-PC is all about pure passion. Back in youngster days I couldn't afford these sound cards. Now I can play my favorite DOS games such as Monkey Island, Loom and Dune with MT-32 music. Also late DOS era games with General Midi music sounds much better with a real Roland Sound Canvans than just a Sound Blaster.

I warmly recommend to compare different music recordings of these games on YouTube, then you know what I mean.
