Releasing another new project : CrystalBlaster C2, based on CrystalBlaster C1
C1 was a through hole solder kit, this is a completely soldered, mostlySMT PCB version.
It has a 90s low end wavetable synthy sound, as it uses the Crystal CS9236 chip.

Available at https://www.serdashop.com/CrystalBlaster-C2

CS9236 specifications :

  • General MIDI (GM) compliant
  • 32-note polyphony at 44.1kHz rate
  • Independent reverb and chorus levels for each MIDI channel
  • 128 melodic instruments and 47 percussion sounds

That compact design and form-factor is giving me some very bad ideas for ARM embedded system board designs that could possibly use such things as add-on hardware, to create a nice retro/arcade gaming machine.

Just curious, why the socket for the crystal chip?

machine assembly
factories do not accept old chip for assembly so having them install a socket was the best option

Ah hah, I see; this has been my experience with trying to get a board made as well. JLCPCB is insanely cheap but it’s SMT-only and requires you to use the parts they have in stock.

Socket allows to add the chips later, and swap out if they don't work. - higher success rate with factory assembly, without need for rework
That is an advantage, it does look fat though
If i ever make a successor revision, i may use tqfp which would be thinner

And here's Super Street Fighter 2. If you love lo-fi synth that isn't even trying to sound realistic, this is the board for you!
I quite like it myself. 😀

It's the official Medium Size Case sold on Serdashop. XL case is also available if you plan to use larger boards like Roland/Yamaha. Note if you buy a case and CHiLL III at the same time you get a nice discount.
