I'd highly recommend PCMIDI card with WP32 McCake. It takes only one ISA slot and you have it all mentioned (and more with soundfonts), and it's inside PC. Can't believe no one mentioned it yet. 😀

I was originally intending to mention that MPU-401 clone to pair it with a DreamBlaster X2GS (which sounds very close to a real Sound Canvas), but for some reason the OP still insist on getting an internal Roland hardware according to his words. 😜

In fairness, aside from the price there isn't anything wrong with getting a Roland SCC-1. A genuine SC-55 sound bank plus MPU401 support (w/ intelligent mode) isn't a bad package.

Pentium 4 Multi-OS Build

486 DX-33 with 5 sound cards

Indeed, there is no argument there in terms of functionality.

Don't get me wrong, in my opinion I found a good offer for Roland, when I can try it I'll see if I like it, also because I find it difficult to have a precise idea of what to do, if it doesn't satisfy me I'll sell it and find something else. I always prefer to try real period hardware before upgrading to new boards. Imagine that I thought that the mpu-401 was 100% functional already on the sound blaster 16 ...

Yes i prefer to use real correct period hardware before search new card, new way… I had read that the scc1 was also excellent because it could drive an mt-32 in the best way…

I think there was a mpu 401 AT that sold for about 120 AUD CIB on ebay.

There was one recently that sold in November, but it was for 10x that amount (~$1200 AUD).

Getting one for only $120 AUD would be a amazing find these days.

Yeah I was surprised that it went for that low , crazy good deal for whoever got it.
