Hi Guys,

New to the forum and hoping some of you have experience with this card. Currently it has 1MB and I would like to fill the 8 empty sockets to get it up to 2MB but I’m not sure what chips to search for. I’m guessing I should get 8 pieces of 128k DRAM, or is it 8 pieces of 256x4 70ns 20-PIN DIP chips? Theres a lot on ebay that says 8 of 256x4 chips equals 1MB

Easier to just buy some card like Trident 8900, with 8 chips installed.
That said, you don't need 2mb for DOS or any Windows game which can be played on that card.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Ya I figured there wouldn’t be much advantage with 2MB especially since I’m only using dos but I figured I’d do it just to get higher resolution settings for certain games that can use it. I think Duke Nukem 3D has options for higher resolutions if your video card has 2MB

It does, but VLB = 486 CPUs. Those barely can play Duke 3D at 640x480 (512kb required), even nicer ones like AMD 5x86.

Although there are those mutant motherboards that bridge from pci to vlb with early Pentium cpus.

Probably it is pointless for games but having more color depth in Windows 95 might be a fun idea. What you need is 44256 dip chips. 8 of them will make 1MB.

Thanks for the info! I'm gonna go ahead and upgrade the card to 2MB even though it won't do anything for my games, I might want to install windows down the road and mess around with that 😀

Ahhhh I see. I just tried VESA mode 640x480 and it ran horrible 🤣 that's why I thought the extra video ram would help with that 🤣

I'll end up building another PC for Duke Nukem and later DOS games, pretty much everything else I play runs great on the 486DX2-66 😀

The only thing I got from the 2MB upgrade on this Cirrus card is support for 64k colours in 1024x768. BUT this mode is interlaced only so it works on my CRT Screen but not on an LCD Flatscreen.
(2-4Mb VLB Video Card)

I cannibalized old cheap cards for the free ram and did exactly the same thing with my CL5428. Running W95 and was pleased with the result. Also filling empty slots scratches the old retro itch...
