This is why you just stick with 486s and never get anything newer. For anything. Ever.

I must agree with the previous posts.
Having built a few K6-II+ and K6-III+ systems on ALi and VIA chipsets, I had nothing but trouble except with Voodoo3 cards.
Performance in Windows has also been quite bad for anything but the least demanding 3D games.

That's why I switched to the i440BX platform. Crashing is now a thing of the past, and the AGP port works... wow.
Granted, that even with all these systems with configurable FSB and CPU multipliers, for ultimate 486-era compatibility, nothing beats a 486.

Is SS7 slow? YES. Why?
SS7 motherboards were detuned because of stability problems due to.
Reason 1: K6-2/3 CPUs were unstable. K6-2+/3+ are not unstable.
Reason 2: Stable good quality ram was not easy to get so they had to go with settings that will support the ram on the market at the time.
Reason 3: People use completely wrong hardware and drivers with SS7 systems.

Here is a quick how to make my K6 faster than a P2.

Hardware:
ALi/VIA motherboard
128mb Ram and nothing more! There are exceptions, like VIA with 1Mb cache can run at full speed with 256Mb ram. A SS7 system does not need more than 128Mb of ram.
Geforce 2/3. The fastest card for a SS7 is a Geforce 3 Ti500 NOTHING else!
ATi Cards, there is a curtain setup with an ATi card that dramatically boosts performance. Unfortunately I do not remember how I got it to work 🙁
Be careful of your choice of sound card as this can cripple performance!

Software:
Win98SE
ALi driver 1.72 or 1.82 or 1.90. I usually use 1.82. 1.90 could be more stable with some setups.
DirectX 7.0A(This I use for 3DMARK2000 world record) But DirectX8.0 works fine for games like NFS Porsche 2000
Nvidia Driver 7.76! NOTHING else!!
CTU tweak for easy system tweaking
Can also use Power Tweak 2
BIOS settings are important
ALi tweaking using Regedit could be important(depends on system) This could will aid in stability.
