VOGONS

I am updating my video card collection spreadsheet after many years partly because I wanted to know how many 3DFX cards I own. Almost all of them I acquired over the past six years, with the exception of a Banshee I bought at retail back in the late 90s. I don't think I'll be buying any more unless I come across one in an odd lot or system. The current prices have made adding to the collection prohibitive. I have most of what I want anyway, except for a Voodoo 4. I'm selling off other video card makes because I want to clear out some space, but I can't bring myself to sell any 3DFX card. So this is probably what my collection will look like for a while.

32 cards total. I guess that this is probably above the median number at Vogons, but maybe not by much. I'm sure that some have collections in the hundreds, and NIB examples in the dozens.

The breakdown: V1 (2), V2 12MB (3), Banshee (3), V3 1000 (3), V3 2000 (7) ,V3 3000 (10), V3 3500 (1), V5 (3). Two are NIB, and a few are CIB.

Some of the more interesting cards are a V3 2000 with a silver heatsink and 6ns memory, the 8MB Gateway V3 1000 (Velocity 100), the no-heatsink Compaq V3 1000 (Velocity 200), and the no-TV tuner Compaq V3 3500.

Some observations:

Three or four of my V3 cards have gone bad or are in the process. They have all been 3000 AGP models.
I have zero 2000 AGP models. Not sure if this model is rarer than PCI or if I just passed on the AGP.
All my V3 3000 cards have 6ns memory, including the 1000 models. A couple of the 2000 cards have it too.

I wouldn't mind getting a Rush, and I might end up paying up for a V4 just to have it. So what are your collections like?

I have only standard models, nothing special:

Voodoo 4MB
Voodoo2 8MB
Voodoo2 12MB
Voodoo Rush 6MB PCI
Voodoo Banshee 16MB AGP and PCI
Voodoo3 1000 8MB AGP
Voodoo3 2000 AGP and PCI
Voodoo3 3000 AGP and PCI
Voodoo4 4500 32MB AGP
Voodoo5 5500 64MB PCI

I have at least one boxed model in each series (except Rush and Banshee). No idea how many of each model (all in all probably around 30) and I sold about 20 in the last year (mostly V3 2K and 3K AGP/PCI).

Still missing V5 5500 AGP, although I have the empty box 🤣 I never liked V3 3500 so I don't care if I don't have it...

Requests are also possible... /msg kixs

I was lucky to get a CIB V5 5500 AGP in mint condition because the seller took very good care of it. It even included the unused mousepad that I think came with it as a promotion.

When that seller had hundreds (?) of NOS V3 3500 cards for like $20 apiece, I bought a few. I couldn't get them to work and returned them. (I even mentioned it in a Vogons thread.) Others had similar issues, but now I wish I would have kept them and think the problem may have been on my end. I picked up another one from another seller that works, but I never use it because it's my only one, 🤣.

I did a little searching and found an ad from a Feb. 2000 issue of PC Magazine that told me a little more about the Compaq OEM V3 cards.

It looks like the V3 3500 was paired with a P3-600 and was the second-tier desktop (the first-tier at $2,299 was the P3-700 with GeForce 256). The V3 1000 came with a P3-500 in the "budget model."

Let's see, not too many but still way more than I really need:

Diamond Monster Voodoo 1
Voodoo 3 2000 agp SDRAM
Voodoo 3 2000 pci SDRAM
Voodoo 3 2000 pci SGRAM with small silver heatsink
Voodoo 3 3000 pci SGRAM
Voodoo 5 agp with box. Too bad this card has interference in it's video output. Not sure if I can fix it, maybe needs a recap.
Voodoo 5 pci with box, also has the mousepad

What I currently own:
- 2x Voodoo 1 - one working, one with artifacts
- 3x Voodoo 2 - two working, one is missing a cap (never tested, keep it as a spare)
- 2x Banshee - one working, one doesn't
- 1x V3 1000 - the seller had packed it so well, that a few caps were so happy they popped 😁 (not tested, need to solder those caps back)
- 3x Voodoo 3 3000 AGP - all working, one has a small missing cap; one of them is special, I like to call it "The Dark Knight"; it has an original Black heatsink and modified 5.5ns ram chips
- 1x Voodoo 4 4500 AGP - not working, has artifacts
- 1x Voodoo 5 5500 AGP - working
- 3dfx Hammerhead Gamepad - not working, missing one analog knob

For statistic purposes what I had in my hands but then later sold or gave to friends:
- lots of Voodoo 1 (Diamond Multimedia, A-Trend, Skywell, a special one that could be upgraded to 8mb, unknown OEM, ecc...)
- lots of Voodoo 2 (Diamond Multimedia 8mb+12mb, Creative Labs, A-trend, STB, Skywell, ecc...)
- some Banshee (Creative Labs PCI, Creative Labs AGP, Ensoniq, ecc...)
- 1x Voodoo Rush (Yakumo)
- many Voodoo 3 (STB 2000 AGP, STB 2000 PCI, 3500 Compaq, 3500 Standard AGP, Asus V3-3300, many V3 3000 AGP)

All cards I own are lose, the only thing I have a part from the cards is an original V3 3000 CD.

edit: forgot about my V3 1000

Here's how the Gateway sold their V3s (Nov. 1999 PC Magazine). The 8MB V3 1000 was sold in a budget "Essential" line paired with a P3-450.

Gateway had a TV-tuner V3 3000 (not 3500, although I'd like to see the memory) in its "Performance" line (P3-550). The top of the line card was a TNT2 Ultra that came with a P3-600.

- Ensoniq 3D Banshee. Purchased from the the PPro Haul, partly casue I know it'll go up in price and partly to try out this unloved card.
- Voodoo 3 2000 PCI. Found in a Slot A PC I pulled from a actual dumpster PC.
- 2x Diamond Monster Voodoo2 12MB. Both purchased around 2012, Paid £4.20 for the first and bit the bullet and spent £19.99 for the 2nd even though thought it was bit pricey but could see writing on the wall and knew they would go up in price.

Thinking I'll get a V1 for a future build, would love a V5 as it's the "final" card but don't really need it and not spending those prices. Rush would be interesting but not spending money on one

My very first Voodoo card was a Diamond Banshee. I was living in a city that actually had a Tiger Direct retail store, and it had a section of open-box items that they sold at a discount. I picked up the Banshee for very little and was blown away by how much better it was than my Riva 128 (STB Velocity 128) when paired with my K6-2 350.

I didn't buy my next Voodoo card until maybe 15 years later, after I joined Vogons.

I have one Creative branded 16MB Banshee and a Voodoo2 with 12MB of DRAMs that have 110MHz written on them, no clue who made the card though. Both have been modified to have heatsinks and fans, those chips get ridiculously hot on these cards...

3x Vodoo1 (Didn't want more than 2, but I found the last one for just 1 Euro so why not)
3x Voodoo2 12MB (NOS matching STB cards from Russia - 2 for SLI and a third one in case one dies)
1x Voodoo2 8MB
1x Banshee 16MB
1x Voodoo3 1000
1x Voodoo3 2000
2x Voodoo3 3000

Looks like a bit much, but I actually got to use all of them quite a bit. Couldn't afford a Voodoo or any gaming card back in the day, so catching up is fun.

My builds!
The FireStarter 2.0 - The wooden K5
The Underdog - The budget K6
The Voodoo powerhouse - The power-hungry K7
The troll PC - The Socket 423 Pentium 4

Had a Creative Voodoo Banshee PCI back in the day, got it for Christmas in middle school. Unfortunately it died around the year 2000 and I tossed it back then. (bad artifacting)

Now I own:
- 1x Voodoo 5 5500 64MB AGP
- 2x Voodoo 3 3000 16MB AGP
- 1x Voodoo 3 3000 16MB PCI
- 1x Voodoo Banshee 16MB AGP
- 2x Voodoo 2 12MB PCI
- Hammerhead 3DFX Gamepad

All are working.

My favorite build is my Voodoo 5 Shuttle:

my only 3Dfx card I have ever owned new was a Creative 3D Blaster Voodoo² 8MB that I purchased pretty early after release in 1998 and used in my P1 system along with a Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro and shortly after in the same year in my PII system along with a Matrox G200 and that I unfortunately sold for a measely sum after I upgraded to a TNT2 ultra.

lately I have collected a few but am missing all the later really expensive cards ^^

3x Voodoo1 4MB
1x Orchid Righteous 3D Voodoo1 4MB
1x míro HiScore 3D Voodoo1 6MB
1x Voodoo Rush 8MB
one or two Voodoo2 8MB (I believe I had two though I can't find the other one in the list right now x3 have to check, I live in chaos)
4x Voodoo2 12MB (2x matching cards in SLI)
4x Voodoo Banshee AGP
1x Voodoo3 3000 PCI with 183Mhz RAM
1x Voodoo3 2000 AGP

of the newer cards I only have one very sad Voodoo4 with a physically damaged interposer, I have a contact of someone who can repair the card though if I ever decide to spend the money on it.
I think at least half of the cards came from scrap lots.

I've got a few, I used to own a few Voodoo 3 PCI cards that all went, shouldn't have done that!

- VillageTronic MacMagic 8MB Voodoo 1 card - nice card, small but runs hot
- 2 x STB Voodoo II 12MB cards - in my DOS/Windows rig, not that old came from the bay seller that was dumping these dirt cheap a few years back
- Voodoo 5 5500 Mac Edition PCI card; in a Mac! I suspect it has problems though

Poor me...
1x Diamond Monster voodoo 1
1x CT 3D blaster voodoo 2, might not be working
1x nameless voodoo 3 3000 AGP confirmed to boot into DOS and runs DOS benchmarks... Still have to put out into my K6-3 machine.

Most of my machines can't handle a 3DFX card, because they lack AGP and PCI and run 486 or less ( 🤣 )

Stuck at 10MHz...

I have three Voodoo II's, all working fine - although my PowerColor V2 has a tilted TMU from applying too much force when adding a heatsink. Whoops! 😁

And I also have a Banshee 16MB, but I never really use it - Schleichfahrt doesn't display some textures on a Banshee which makes it a bit useless.

I have a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI. I didn't use Voodoo cards growing up so I don't really have any fascination for them, and for general DOS and Windows 98 usage there are better and cheaper cards out there. I thought it was good to have at least one for the glide games and my 2000 PCI found me for than I found it...
