Atm I have a PCI PNY Geforce FX5200 in my pentium III Windows 98 machine. Seems a waste to not use the AGP 4x slot. What’s the best for it?

System is
Pentium III Coppermine 1ghz
ABIT Vh6-II
1024 MB RAM
ESS AudioDrive 1868f

Mostly for late DOS and most/all Windows 98 gaming. Things like Simcity 3000, Duke 3d, Fatal Racing, etc etc. best performance (for the time) with maximum compatibility. Currently my FX5200 can’t do 800x600 in duke3d without large frame drops during actiony moments. Would like that to change.

Early 90s: IBM PS/2 Server 95/A, Pentium 66, 16MB RAM, XGA-2, IBM SCSI Corvette, SCSI2SD, 3 Com EtherLink III MCA, Resound 2 AdLib MCA
Late 90s: Micron Millenia MXE, ABIT VH6-II, Coppermine 1ghz, 1024MB, Voodoo 5 5500 PCI, GUS Max 2.1, 128GB SATA PNY SSD

Problem is you want dos compatablitly, Nvidia are better then ATI in this area and even then GF4 Ti or the FX range is as high as you want to go for Win98 gaming compatability.
Not sure I would spend money on getting a GF4 Ti if I already owned a FX, doubt the performance increase would justify the cost on a P3. all these cards are Dx9/WinXP era already so plenty powerful for Win98

Still you can check here for dos side of things, maybe some of the problem games dont matter for you.

Duke3d in SVGA can stuggle on P4´s let alone a P3 no matter whcih graphic card you have. It was more of a tech demo and never highly optimised, I think this did improve on later build games though.

I just found an ATI 9600XT on ebay, NIB for $30 shipped. Can’t hurt to try it. Should be fun. Also saw it recommended a ton for Coppermine builds through extensive research.
