My fastest vlb system contains this hardware:
Aquarius MB-4DUV, cyrix 5x86-100, Promise cache controller (VLB), 32MB ram, some VLB i/o card for com/lpt (ide and FDD are disabled in favour of the Promise).

Now I have 2 graphics cards I really like;
- Cirrus Logic GD5428 with 2MB
- Diamond Stealth SE (S3 Trio32) 1MB

The Diamond turns out to be slightly faster in DOS benchmarks. So I like to upgrade it to 2MB. There are upgrade slots available and I do have matching memory chips.

However when I insert these chips, the card will not use them and univbe keeps reporting 1024kB.
No n00b mistake: I did orientate then correctly.
There chips don't get hot either.
All contacts seem ok.

I did exchange the memory chips with my 5428: that one does report 2048kB in univbe with both sets of chips.
Win3.11 also boots the 5428 to 800x600x16b on both sets. So they seem okay.

Do I miss something here? Why won't my Diamond report 2048kB video ram?

That would be a pity... But could be soldered on if I knew what is needed here 😀

Any ideas? Would this be the issue, or would these be used for something else?

- R70
- R114
- RP1

I also noticed there are a lot of other components not places, so maybe this wouldn't be?

The RP1 seems to be a pull-up resistor array on memory address bus outputs.

I couldn't find a SE with RP1 installed.

Two of my Stealth SE PCI cards also doesn't have this RP1 installed and they work fine with 2MB.

My Stealth 64 VLB has them but PCI versions don't.

I guess it is optional.

I'd try a different RAM chips. Sometimes there are compatibility issues.

The ram chips I tried were not reported, neither the chips from the 5428 when I swapped them. I guess I could see if I've got some more chips the test... To be continued.

Ten PCI graphics cards... Six VLB... Fifteen isa. None with usable and removable chips (without desoldering).

Possible solution is on its hand: this week or next one I'll receive another bunch of S3 virge cards, just to harvest the ram chips from the sockets

In three mailbox appeared three virge cards: one 325 and two 375 DX ones.

The 375 did indeed prove not to have the correct ram: image shattered.

The 325 did in fact have the correct ram and now my Stealth SE has the full 2MB 😁

To be more precisely: the SE has two soldered chips: NEC 424260-70
The chips I got from the dead Cirrus were also 424260-70 but different brand.

The virge 375s have 424263-60 chips and didn't work for me.
The virge 325 has 424258 chips that do work.

Problem solved! 😁

I feel pleased that S3 card got that upgrade 😉

Just as it should have had off factory 😁
(And maybe did, long ago)
