That heatsink is good design but heavy. I wished that Geforce2, 3, 4 and FX series got properly designed heatpipe coolers back in the day and lighter.

Heh, I'm not sure I've seen that particular one, but as mentioned in the article there was a dual 6600GT by Gigabyte which I believe required a mainboard with SLI to function and was very picky as well. Certainly cool tech for the time though.
Leadtek also made dual 6600GT. And ASUS pioneered the whole thing with gargantuan sized Dual6800GT.

One of my friends had the Gigabyte dual 6600GT - it required a special board from Gigabyte to operate properly with the 8+8 PCIe lane configuration on one card. Performance was around where my 6800GT was, but louder 😀

Interesting that they didn't just use a PCIe bridge chip. Were PCIe 1.0 bridge chips unavailable?

These cards were heavily promoted with Nforce 4 SLI motherboards. Chipset itself served as a bridge, which is similat to how ATi Rage Fury MAXX worked, i.e. each chip use half of available PCIe lines, which don't share data between each other.
ASUS also made GeForce 7800GT Dual, which works on identical principal.
