Hi, any one else tried a Nvidia mx440 in a Compaq Evo d500 intel 845 chip set?

Tried upgrading to to the mx440 from tnt2 32mb, but it'll not boot to bios, tried resetting the bios, when switching back to the tnt2 all fine.

The mx440 is the Dell low profile card agp x8, but should be backward compatible.

Any ideas?

Sneaking suspicion, Dell mx 440 x8 agp could be Agb 3. 0.8v. anyone able to confirm?

I Like Charity Shops, they're like steam and GOG but cheaper.

There are two MX440 which is 4x, supports 2x and 1x as well, and other one MX440 8x. But your motherboard 845 is AGP 4x. This means it works with 1x, 2x and 4x. You need to get another card that is not 8x. That means MX440 or Geforce2 MX400 (careful with this MX400 could be MX as the gpu-z sellers uses reports both MX and MX400 but sellers assumes MX400 but in fact some are MX cards.

MX400 is 200MHz core, while MX is 175MHz. MX400 that is either memory with 128 bit is SDR 166MHz or DDR 64bits at 200 even at 64 bits, transfers more data than SDR.

Cheers,

Seems strange to me, as I have GF4 MX440 128MB/128bit AGP 8x (NV18 vs older NV17) in motherboard with BX chipset which supports only AGP 1x and 2x.
Works beautifully without any problems. Intel 845 is much newer chipset (2002 vs 1998) so shouldn't be problematic as well.

I'd say this particular model of the card is the culprit (or this Compaq computer 😉

Thanks, looking for a bios update, for evo late version d500 set, don't see how the bios vary between d500 but hardware varys consirabily sff has no onboard VGA. Regulary has a hissy fit if you change the hard drive or memory.

Ok, no go, sp21599, coming up wrong file size, ignore

Tried sp21597, needs a diskette.

Tried mixing the two, flashlite comes up with not for your device.

Txt for sp21597 mentions adding support for quadro cards. Look like the right track, but 10years to late

Installed bios 2.11

Ok, yes and no.

Flashed to v3.04, boots to Windows I think, but no graphic output, tnt 32 works fine still.

found a GF2 MX400 64mb on Fleabay (one of the offered cards from Compaq was the gf2 mx400 32Mb) ,

hopefully works, think the other card mas a gf4 mx440. with DVI/TV only, looks like gt5200 would be out of the question on this system

Mm OEM computers... They ar cool but often less compatible...

Otherwise I share the experience that old motherboards can handle much later agp cards. My SS7 (agp 1x) was compatible with my gf4 440 Mx 128 mb (8x).

I Think/remember that Compaq was the worst, like to do everything differently, right down to their use of torex screws for drives etc.
