I bought an MSI GeForce FX 5500 that appears to work but can also send the system into a BSOD. OpenGL works. Even the dxdiag DirectX tests work. But if I launch a benchmark or game that uses Direct3D like Unreal or 3DMark99, the system will crash.

I suspected that this was a counterfeit 5200 with a dodgy flash to a 5500 that only partially worked so I forced it to use those drivers and everything was stable. Interestingly, this didn't change the clock speeds so I'm not sure what changed within the driver.

I then removes the heatsink expecting to find a 5200 die but it is clearly etched as 5500. I have another FX 5500 by BFG which works fine when swapped in. I don't know what the deal is with this card.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

I reinstalled the driver via Device Manager to FX 5500 to take a video and suddenly it's working fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled several driver versions prior to this without any change in stability which prompted me to create this topic.

I don't know what it's working now.
