Hi

So I have installed the driver from CD on Win95 OSR2 and in the Windows everything works fine but in real DOS mode enabling MIDI emulation cause the system to freeze. It happened with every mode, sometimes it freezes immediately, and sometimes it plays a little bit of music then freeze. And if I hard reset the computer, it starts to continuous beep, so I have to turn off and turn the computer back on. I've tried different option in autoexec.bat, but nothing works.

AWEUTIL /S
AWEUTIL /EM:GM,GS,MT32

Games I have tried including Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and Doom II

And why synth banks aren't in the same folder as aweutil?

Thanks in advance.

Protected mode software, such as all of the games you listed, will not work directly with AWEUTIL. You can use the DOS32AWE utility to correct this.
DOS32AWE - DOS/4G compatible DOS Extender with Sound Blaster AWEUTIL MIDI synthesizer support for Protected mode,VIASB

As for the soundfont files, they should be in a subdirectory named SFBANK. Then AWEUTIL will automatically locate them.

So if you have your SOUND environment variable set to "SB16":
AWEUTIL.EXE located at \SB16\AWEUTIL.EXE
soundfonts located at \SB16\SFBANK\SYNTHxx.SBK

Don't those games support AWE32 natively? Then they shouldn't require AWEUTIL's emulation (besides aweutil /s for initialization).

Yes, but if you select the Sound Blaster/AWE32 in setup, not General Midi.

Yeah, most 32-bit DOS games support AWE32 natively. These will freeze if you try to use the General MIDI support because of the way the drivers work.

I ran into all kinds of problems like this with trying to get my AWE64 Gold to work in my PIII-550. I'm thinking of just swapping it out for an SB16 🤣

Good to know that DOS32AWE is another option though.

Yeah, kudos to the developer(s).
