**********************************************************************************************

ANOTHER project I'm working on at the moment 😀

Some of you might know, GOG.com games, the ones that use DOSBox are a great, legal and ethical way to get MS-DOS games. I understand it's not for everyone and some prefer boxed games, others just pirate them, but for those who like and support GOG.com as well and want to play these games on a real MS-DOS Gaming PC: Well this thread is for you 😀

So far I have produced two, quite elaborate, videos covering the GOG.com release of Wing Commander III and Prinball Dreams Deluxe.

Wing Commander III: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1kD567PuFQ

Pinball Dreams Deluxe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQtBjNq_mnE

Both of these games sue mounted CD images, Wing Commander III a standard ISO, Pinball Dreams Deluxe a non-standard BIN / CUE file with compress audio files.

The method GOG.com uses to ship Pinball Dreams is pretty much as hard as it gets based on the games I have tried so far. So if you are able to follow the steps in the video, you should be able to get most games going.

So far I have come across various releases with various pointers:

- Games that just mount a folder. All you need to do is copy them onto your MS-DOS Gaming PC
- Games that have configuration files with hard-coded folders / directories. Here you can either edit these configuration files or just install the game in the same folder
- Game that come with SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE to change the Sound options
- Games that lack SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE, but have a configuration file to edit, such as Wing Commander or some Sierra games
- Games that give you the full installation CD: Wing Commander III, Strike Commander CD, Pinball Dreams Deluxe...
- Games that come with BIN / CUE images for mixed mode CDs (Data track + Audio CD tracks). These are a bit of work, but nothing really hard.
- Some games don't give you an installation CD AND need files copies into a folder. Quite a pain
- Some games that I haven't been able to get going such as Battle Isle 2

Some examples:

Games that just need files copied: Blake Stone and Wing Commander 1 and 2
Games that give you the full installation CD as ISO image: Gabriel Knights 1 and Police Quest 4
Games that give you the full installation CD as BIN / CUE with compressed audio files: Pinball Dreams Deluxe, Descent 1
Games that lack INSTALL.EXE to change Sound: Wing Commander 1, Space Quest games
Games that require created a mixed mode CD AND need files copied into a directory: Pinball Illusions and Descent 2

The tools I use to make discs are all freeware:

- Free Audio Converter to turn MP3 and OGG files into CD compatible WAV files
- DAEMON Tools to mount images for extracting / accessing files
- InfraRecorder to burn mixed mode (Data + Audio tracks) CDs

That's exactly the idea! Share the info about the games you have managed to get going. So it will be easier for everyone.

Anything that gives a full installation CD is an instant buy for me 😀

I once bought a few games and found out they use ScummVM. I was pissed 😠

Really? Which games? I had the impression they were avoiding ScummVM for some reason. (Teenagent works a lot better under ScummVM than DOSBox, I think.)

So far I came across The Seventh Guest and Eleventh hour. A real shame if you ask me. And also the Simon The Sorcerer games.

Other games are also entirely non-DOS based and use modern engines. Examples are:

- Another World
- Raptor
- Chaos Engine

When I get home I'll go through my collection and try to fill in some of the blanks as to which games fall under which installation category. I've got something like 100+ games from GOG and a good chunk are DOS based.

Maulwurf, you asked what games I was looking to run, here is the shortlist so far:

Both Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret
Quest for Glory 1-5
King's Quest Series
Leisure Suit Larry Series
Ultima 7: the Black Gate & expansions
Strike Commander

Straight forward stuff 😀

I recommend you watch my videos on the Pinball games. It gives you an idea of what is involved.

Most of these games you just need to copy files over. Strike Commander has an ISO image, but can be played entirely from the HDD if you mount the ISO and copy the files over.

Not sure about the Crusader games. I played it before and found the controls weird 😀

Quick list of what I've managed to piece together. Have to go back and do the full list of all the games I've bought from them:

Full installer CD:
Crusader: No Remorse
Kingdom - The Far Reaches: Book 1
Lands of Lore - The Throne of Chaos
Magic Carpet
Megarace
Sim City 2000 Special Edition CD
Strike Commander
Ultima Underworld 1+2
Wing Commander 3 (DVD-sized iso image, full game on a single disc)

Full installer CD, Bin/Cue + OGG madness:
Shadow Warrior (Able to piece it together into the original installer disc, but the add-ons have to be installed seperately)
Redneck Rampage (Same issue with Shadow Warrior)

CD Image + copy the installed folder to your retro machine hard drive:
Castles 2 - Siege and Conquest
Conquest of the New World
Crusader: No Regret
Descent II
Jagged Alliance Deadly Games
Megarace 2
Redneck Rampage Rides Again
Screamer
Silent Steel
Wing Commander Privateer (I think, need to double check)

Just copy the installed folder over to your retro machine:
Battle Chess
Battle Chess 4000
Castles
Chinese Chess
Descent
Duke 3D Atomic Edition
Ultima - Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams
Martian Memorandum
Master of Orion
M.A.X.
Mean Streets
Realms of Arkania 1
Realms of Arkania 2
Worlds of Ultima - The Savage Empire
Ultima 1-7
Starflight
Starflight 2
Syndicate
Wing Commander I + addons
Wing Commander II + addons

I have more, but those are what I had easily accessible right now. I'll get more done over the weekend for you.

I've been working on putting together a list of what games can be played on Win9x just by copying the installed folder over. Basically, anything that doesn't rely on the registry and just runs from it's own folder. That list is going to take waaaay longer. Too many video/sound driver, dx/opengl type compatibility crap to figure out. However, it is in the works.

Could you create a separate Thread for the Windows stuff? I think a LOT of people might find this interesting. Including me 😀

As I shoot my vide, you might have seen it in the first part, I add my findings into a spreadsheet. As this grows it will have detailed tech-specs about each game and briefly describing how to get them going.

Thanks for the list! Great stuff and will safe me a ton of time.

My next games will be Screamer / Screamer 2. I think it might be good practice to post about the games before I do a video people can share any technical issues they are aware off.

Findings so far about Screamer 2:

  • Needs a fast PC (Pentium MMX ok for 320 x 200 but too slow for 640 x 480. Anyone got experience with this game on a fast PIII?
  • Screamer 2 > BIN / CUE > Full Installation CD
  • Screamer > Bin / CUE > Not full installation CD
  • I noticed that when running SETUP.EXE the cycle count is being reduced. Is this a speed issue?
  • 3DFX patch for Screamer 2
  • 16 MB RAM seems good fit
  • Doesn't like EMS
  • 8 Bit Audio only
  • Screamer 2 is missing the manual
