One of my favourites for art & music direction (particularly if you have an MT-32) is the original Dune, although it doesn't match OP's requirements for gameplay style.

I think the original Dune (as well as the other Dune, ie DUNE II) sound much better in OPL3 than MT-32.

There's a thread derailing debate 😉 I guess it often comes down to how you first experienced it. I think we can agree it's a great OST either way, and it definitely makes great use of all its audio options.

Tubular Worlds does not scroll so nice on Mac as on PC due to the upscaling of the 320x200 to 640x400. Same goes for JazzJackRabbit2 on Mac with no hardwarescrolling.

That'd be a slowdown from the lowly '601 CPU on your PPC6100; on faster PPC Macs Tubular Worlds and Jazz 2 look wonderfully smooth

I have played Jazz2 on every machine up to 1,5Ghz PPC and it's not smooth. I think you don't have experienced the "real" smoothness of that game. You can try it an an older PCI-graphics card or an intel igp up to 965gv. All you have to do is switch to 640x400 and 8Bit colors and activate the "hardware-scrolling" in the menu. This makes a BIG difference. If you play this one time, you will always remember it and hate the other versions (like I do) that don't support that feature. On Mac the hardware-scrolling is non existent and it will always play like on PC with 640x480.

Tyrian's quite beautiful. Disregard the "2000" version and its ugly changes though

Can you explain this please. Thx!

Probably the 486-playable 3d games with the shiny water. Comanche expansions (voxels+reflects) and Terra Nova Strike Force Centauri come to mind.

Don't wanna be that guy, but Terra Nova typically requires a Pentium 60. Fairly certain there's nothing preventing the game from running on a fast 486 (100MHz+), but I'm sure performance will be a real struggle, I'd definitely avoid it. A real shame that game never had SVGA modes available, although judging by the performance on that odd resolution it offered in addition to 320x200, I'm guessing it would have been insanely demanding.

My personal pick would be Master of Orion II, I still think that game looks gorgeous and very inviting. Not technically impressive, but beautiful art and UI design really do wonders sometimes.

The Dig

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.

If you want more DOS 16-color VGA graphics porn (sometimes.... literally) there's always those few PC-98->IBM game ports (i.e. Megatech) though they never had any smooth scrolling.

GrumpyTomato's avatar reminded me of Uninvited. Although the Windows 3.x version has, IMHO, the best graphics, no versions of the game has scrolling at all. Just in case someone spots the resemblance, it's the bottom right image:

It's a very interesting game and was made for several different platforms (Mac, Apple II, DOS, NES, Amiga, Windows 3.x) and except for Apple II and Amiga, the versions look and sound very different from each other.
