Another anecdote about DSDMA's compatibility; I can't get it to work with Crusader: No Remorse to save my life. Doesn't matter which expanded memory manager I use or IRQs/DMAs I set, executing install.exe or crusader.exe will crash and reboot my system without fail with the TSR active.

The solution turned out to be within the Yamaha YMF utilities app, which is an utter pain in butt to use in anything but Japanese Windows 98. I got a few more characters to show installing a Japanese Global IME. So far I've gotten FM MIDI playback to work in 98, but not simultaneously with DOS legacy support.

https://web.archive.org/web/20060826110030/ht … -US/JAMONDO.exe (IME)

Edit: I think at this point I can safely confirm that you cannot mix Legacy DOS and Windows FM MIDI playback in the same session. You have to toggle and reboot.

Global IME was an IE-only feature. If you want to display CJK characters globally you need a different tool like NJStar Communicator.

If there's an English version of the utilities it would be better for the purpose.

Ah, I was wondering if I was misremembering whether I saw some of the blocky, English letters appear after the IME or not. I've read that it's IE only as well, so maybe that's the case. My searches have yielded no English version of the app and it likely does not exist. Either way those options I highlighted allow you to choose which MIDI synths are enabled in 98, and hopefully that's of some help to people in the future. This was an obscure, frustrating issue to tackle.

Crusader No Remorse is one of my favorite games. I really wish it can be made to work with DSDMA. Interestingly, even the MOD2AMF.exe tool that comes on the game's CD causes the same machine restart behavior. Definitely the game's sound routines are enemies with DSDMA.
