Get DELTREE.COM from FreeDOS and delete the directory. Then recreate it.

DELTREE came stock with MS-DOS 5.0 and above.

DOSSHELL is also another option.

Make sure to use smartdrv or similar if using DOSSHELL unless you like the reading of folder contents to be slow.

DELTREE came with MSDOS 6.0.
But it works fine in lower version,
MS removed the annoying DOS version check.
Another very useful command I moved from DOS 6
to my MS-DOS 5.0 PC is MOVE (pun intended!).

Ok. I was unsure of the version it came with and the first thing I came across said 5.0.

I went the other way round. Installed MS-DOS 6.0 first, then installed MS-DOS 6.22.
To obtain the best of both worlds. In particular DOSHELL and other DOS 5.0 era utilities, which got removed in 6.2x.

Edlin! Do you remember it?

Yes, but it's merely in English.
We Europeans never got a translated version of diskette #4.. 🙁
Microsoft, or rather, the OEMs, merely included the English files which were available
as self-extracting archive via BBS or FTP server. Very disgusting.
There's nothing worse than inconsistency..

For example, imagine being French and then suddenly being forced to see German text! 🤣
That's how other users of other countries must feel if their native language installation has English language utilities mixed in.
It just feels out of place. Uncomfortable. Like wearing sweaty clothes on a hot summer's day.

However, there's hope, since the utilities on the supplemental disk show the version numbers of v6,
it's the easiest to just install DOS 6.0 first, then install MS-DOS 6.2x.
Or overwrite the DOS directory of DOS 6 with that of DOS 6.2x.
That way, all files are available. 😀

Edit: A few edits (typos fixed).

Not all European languages got a translated DOS version though, many countries were just using DOS in English. Unlike later Windows, DOS was only translated for the important markets and the couple of languages that covered a lot of population. So the rest of Europe was happily using the supplemental disk in English without experiencing these inconsistencies!

Yes, I heard something like that, too. My condolences to them.
I suppose there's nothing worse than being forced to speak (read) a foreign language in your own home (a home should be barrier-free). Especially on a computer, if you're not too tech savvy.

Edit: Please don't get me wrong, I'm not against foreign languages or English.
What I mean is that PC use at home should be stress-free.
If you're being forced to speak English or another language to get things going, it's not a free choice anymore.
Reading an English book etc. is different, it's your free choice to read it. You doing it because you enjoy it.
And if you're in another city, place or country, its fine, too. English is international, after all. Like Chinese and Turkish. 😉
Home is an exception, simply (ie, "my home is my castle").

For example, I remember, Windows 3.1 wasn't released in Slovenia anymore.
However, there was a rare version of OS/2 that was - which included a localized Win-OS/2 by IBM.
So there technically was a localized version of Windows 3.1x, but not as a stand-alone product.

https://hackaday.com/2022/09/12/the-hunt-for- … n-of-ibms-os-2/
https://www.os2museum.com/wp/slovenian-os-2-warp-4/

In case of DOS, it was a tad bit easier, maybe. There were other DOSes aside fr0m MS-DOS.
IBM PC DOS, DR DOS, Novell DOS, Caldera DOS, PTS DOS, Paragon DOS etc.
Though I'm not sure in which languages they were available each. 🤷‍♂️

That being said, these are just my two cents. I didn't mean to go off-topic.
It's just that I use a MS-DOS 6 Installation to get access to MS-DOS 5 era utilities. That's all I meant to tell. 😅

I wrote my own command XDEL (eXtended DELete) which among other things can do this...
It's a little 3K .COM file - if anyone wants I can post it to my site!

But there's already a free tool there you can use:

My DDLINK can do this.

It was designed to copy / perform common file operations between two systems (COM, LPT or LAN),
but it works equally well on just one system...

Bit bigger (16k .COM) but it does a LOT more...

Download Volkov Commander. 4.05 is the best one.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.

I use Volkov Commander 4.01 on my IBM 5150 (with 286 upgrade) and it's fantastic. 90% of my DOS experience in the past was on 6.22 or 7.1, so the limitations of DOS 3.3 were absolutely maddening. VC really really helps for operations that are either cumbersome or impossible on older DOS versions.

Since the program was first released only a year or so after MS-DOS 5.0, I don't think anyone would be losing out on the "retro-experience" by using this for certain things.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

It is small, it is free. Why not use 4.05. 4.01 may have some bugs in it.

No idea why I have 4.01, but that was what was recommended to me a while back and that is what's on the PC. I wasn't saying 4.01 was better, just stating what version I used on that PC. 😀

You might be able to use CALL ABSOLUTE to call int x21 to read a directory listing in QBasic. In Quick Basic you could use CALL INTERRUPT.

Do not read if you don't like attention seeking self-advertisements!

Did you read it anyway? Well, you can find all sorts of stuff I made using various programming languages over here:

Edlin exists on all x86 versions of NT, I think, including Windows 10.
It doesn't exist on x64 editions though, I guess it's a DOS executable which was never ported to Win32 so it wouldn't run on x64 versions of Windows.

That's how I would have done it in QuickBASIC 30 years ago as a kid with no money, but now I would check if QuickPak Professional - which is now free and open source - has any useful functions, and it does:

NAME PURPOSE
---- -------
ReadFile Obtains a list of file names from disk and loads
them into a conventional (not fixed-length) string
array.

ReadFilel Obtains a list of file names, sizes, dates and times
from disk, formats them and loads them into a
conventional string array.

ReadFileT Obtains a list of file names from disk and loads
them into a fixed-length string array.

ReadFileX Obtains a list of file names, sizes, dates and times
from disk, formats them and loads them into
separate components of a TYPE array.

It's also cool to learn how to do things via interrupts, but I look forward to someday writing some code using QuickPak Pro and pretending I'm a professional in the '90s 😁
