Hmmm...interesting. I have seen that type of behavior on some of my 98se systems. But as long as whatever I was running was already closed and those files saved for a few minutes before I attempted shutdown, I never cared. I have a script I created to save my 95/98se state and then I can restore it at any given point--kinda like a manual version of 'system restore'. If there was ever an issue, I just restore my settings and reboot and get back to it. 😀

Back in February of 2004, MS released a CDROM with all of the updates for Win98 -> WinXP thru October 2003. I ordered a copy of it back then and saved it.

Sadly, it has never been much use to me because it automatically installs DX9 and IE6 along with its stupid bug with deleting files in Windows Explorer. With the potential fix that Jorpho provided, maybe you can find it to be of some use. I know that Win98SE was supported through July of 2006, so I'm sure there are a couple years worth of updates missing. Perhaps it can be of use though since this is an actual official Microsoft updates rollup disc. I tried to find it available for download so I could link it for you, but I couldn't come up with anything. I've uploaded my copy to my PogoPlug account and you can download it here:

Brilliant, I've been looking for something like this as well and also could only find 3rd party packages that add in a bunch of stuff or tweak stuff. I'd rather a vanilla experience that I tweak my self thank you very much!

Thanks! It beats working with third party attempts at updating a fresh install of 98se. No matter how well the intention, stuff happens. I use Powerdesk (my all time favorite Windows Explorer replacement) instead of Windows Explorer- so hopefully any associated bugs there won't come into play.

Burned to a cd and installed on my Windows 98se machine- worked just fine and installed updates so fast I couldn't follow them! While it is listed as Win9x... apparently that means either Windows 98 or 98SE only- not Windows 95 as that system wouldn't even run the cd.

After installing, I deleted all shortcuts for Windows Explorer and as I said earlier- use Powerdesk 3.0 as a explorer replacement. A fantastic file manager which I was a beta tester for back in the old days.

No idea of where to find a hot fix for Explorer bug that deletes files somehow. Anybody have that fix on hand, I would appreciate it- till then Explorer is dead for me.

Otherwise- the system is stable and I have had no issues as yet.

Of course not. When MS drops support for a particular version of WIndows, they want everyone to stop using it ASAP. To that end, they're not going to do anything to make life easier for the people who continue to use it.

Umm, no. The links lead to the security bulletins, but those pages don't have any links to the actual patches. Also, searching the MS downloads site using the KB number (replace the "Q" with "KB") usually doesn't turn up the Windows 98 version of the patch. I'm not sure if they've deleted them or if their stupid search engine just isn't finding them.

I tried using Google's advanced search to search just the MS site, but unfortunately, the idiots at Google have also crippled their search engine to so that it basically just picks one of your search terms and ignores the rest, making it impossible to narrow down your search.

My apologies for the extreme delay in seeing your reply. I just noticed it now.

The bug is related to IE6 on Win98 systems. It doesn't actually delete any files randomly or anything like that. It just hangs for a long time when you try to delete something.

What about this CD? Is this is the one like that, but earlier version?

I thinks that just takes a regular Win98 and makes it a Win98SE.
