When I install High Stakes on my pc and run it in. D3D6 mode, it crashes to desktop. What should I do? I don't want to use any external unofficial patches which replace the d3da.dll. The game works fine on WinXP without issues.

Which Windows version are you installing it in? if it works on winXP, why not use it there?

I upgraded my OS. I no longer have the hardware supported by WinXP. Yet I tried this out again on my VM and the game worked fine

What did you upgrade to? Windows Vista? 7? 8? 8.1? 10? all are upgrades to XP and each will have more or less issues with old games.

Well, then just play the game in the VM and you can get the game accelerated in 3Dfx Glide mode without any fans' made patches. From the year of this game, I doubt the game will run better with D3D6 mode compared to 3Dfx Glide mode.

The situation is same with Vista,7,8,8.1,10. I have used all these OS in the past.I currently use Windows 10 and I also tried out all the 32-bit versions but to no avail.

The problem is, the game isnt stable on a VM .On any mode the game would Blue Screen caused by hal.dll

Currently there are no better ways to run the NFS games on Windows 10 than using the ports. They are decent, not perfect by any means but they work. Trying to run the original binaries will most likely not work on modern Windows, since they require old (20 year+) libraries, 32 bits, some APIs may no longer exist, etc.

I don't know which VM you had tried. I was able to run NFS2:SE, NFS3:Hot Pursuit and NFS5:PU flawlessly on 3Dfx Glide mode on QEMU running Win98/2K/XP guest OS on Linux or Windows 10 host. Frame rate was within high 40 FPS and rarely dropped below 35 FPS. On Linux with QEMU KVM, NFS5:PU could even play at 60~70FPS, very fast and responsive. Except for NFS2:SE which I deliberately scaled up the resolution, all of them were running native at 1024x768 with maxed out details and view distance. There won't be any performance issue going up at at an even higher native resolution. 1024x768 is usually my favorite playing on laptop with FHD panel.

I also have NFS4:High Stake.. I will check it out and get back to you later.

NFS4:High Stake on QEMU 3Dfx. No issue.
BTW, unlike NFS3 which works on Windows 2000 and Windows XP without much hassle, I couldn't get NFS4 to work on anything other than Windows 98SE, even Windows ME does not work. If you got it to work on Windows XP, then you must have applied unofficial/fans' patch. The game installer won't even install on Windows 2000 and a message popped out "This game only works on Windows 95 and 98."

I was able to play any other game with DX6. When I ran High Stakes on Win 10, I ran a debugger called DebugView. It showed Fault Tolerant Heap error saying d3da.dll crashes. But when YOU COPY the same .dll file to NFS3, NFS3 works normally.
High Stakes can run with D3D7(Porsche Unleashe),D3D8(Hot Pursuit 2),D3D9(Underground) .dll files without problems.

Another thing I noticed was, when I ran High Stakes using dgVoodoo , the game crashed similarly but it was processing other graphics essentials like loading texture to memory, color pallette, etc as was reported by DebugView. There was no Fault Tolerant Heap error then.

The most suspecting thing is how that .dll file that crashes, can run on NFS3.
I have been able to run NFS3, NFS Porsche, NFS HP2 with my orig CD, these games too have problems but I have made videos to fix all the issues without having to use mods in my channel INFINITE-HERTZ.

There was no mods used.I installed it with the disc and it worked ONLY AFTER i installed the 4.50 patch and a no-cd crack for the drm.

And NFS3 does work on any modern Windows OS. Watch this video for NFS3 fix without any mods.https://youtu.be/kSbQW-NqNVc

I tried VMware.
I can run NFS2:SE, NFS3:Hot Pursuit and NFS5:PU flawlessly on 3Dfx Glide and even of D3D mode on my main PC with dgVoodoo or nGlide. The problem isn't with WIndows, its a problem of modern hardware and drivers. I am trying to discover what is the problem of NFSHS DX6, the DX6 file works properly even on NFS3.

The system ACT database has the Win95VersionLie fix for the NFS4 installer. Tested with WinXpSp3 and ACT 5.5.
The game itself needs CorrectFilePaths and EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace fixes.

Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).

There is another way, download a copy of High Stakes from my abandonware and run the iso/mdf/mds file with DAEMON tools, the driver for daemon tools installs the game properly without this error

Try running dxwebsetup to update DirectX. I remember it already helped me running some older games. If you wanna stay "official" you can try using d3da.dll from a newer NFS game, if you have.

Frankly, on a modern OS I would use the modern patch.
Either that, or just go period correct with a Pentium 3 + nVidia Riva TNT2 Ultra (or Voodoo 3).

1 x PLCC-68 / 2 x PGA132 / 5 x Skt 3 / 9 x Skt 7 / 12 x SS7 / 1 x Skt 8 / 14 x Slot 1 / 5 x Slot A
5 x Skt 370 / 8 x Skt A / 2 x Skt 478 / 2 x Skt 754 / 3 x Skt 939 / 7 x LGA775 / 1 x LGA1155
Current PC: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
Backup PC: Core i7 7700k

I don't use because i want the classic resolution and graphics. The modern patch modfies the graphics somewhat minimal. I would like a unmodified original game on D3D6 mode but I think it impossible.
Except modern patch, i can use a different d3da file to get the game working, but I don't get the original feeling anyway.

May MS does any complete backwards compatibility thing in the May update 😀

If you want to play unmodified, two decades old game, then it's somehow given, that you'll use period correct PC, and not one with OS two decades newer...

Socket 775 - ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA, Pentium E6500K, 4GB RAM, Radeon 9800XT, ESS Solo-1, Win 98/XP
Socket A - Chaintech CT-7AIA, AMD Athlon XP 2400+, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9600XT, ESS ES1869F, Win 98

I doubt MS will cater to your wish even if you are genuine paying customer. Games compatibility was the least concerns (or never being one...) for OS upgrades. MS already resorted to emulation by introducing XPMode for the business world. AFAIK, NFS High Stakes is much better on 3Dfx Glide compared to D3D6, and that simply make D3D6 obsolete without much attention from the modding community.
