I have found and currently i’m testing these drivers for X58 on Win98 https://www.modlabs.net/files/experimental-in … rs#.Y7oqUC_SJE4

In short it is a handful of .inf, .vxd, .sys and .cat files

Is there any way to embed this directly into the Windows 98 CD so it can automatically find them during setup?

Was it a myth you can just copy certain updates in the Win98 directory (to burn on cd or copy to HD) . Then when you installed 98 from that media these updates would take precedence over the older versions.

certain updates (...) would take precedence

"Loose" files inside the setup directory will take precedence over ones stored in cab files, so any update that just replaces already existing files will work that way. But if you need to integrate additional ones then that's more work.

The drivers probably came from here originally:
https://msfn.org/board/topic/163405-slipstrea … et-inf-drivers/

That thread also has installation instructions:

How do I use these INF's?

Unzip them and place them in the same directory as your Windows 98SE CAB files prior to installation, and they will be used instead of the older versions inside the CABs.

In order to use these, you will need to copy the \WIN98 folder of your 98SE CDROM to your Hard Drive and install from there, or be able to create a new Windows 98SE CD with these files added to the \WIN98 folder.

Copying the files into the WIN98 directory had no effect. The inf files worked when installed by hand but were ignored during setup.

I will try Win9x quick slipstreaming tonight.

Thank you, interesting source

1) \tools\reskit\infinst from the 98CD does not work because the .inf starts with Signature="$WINDOWS NT$"

2) Win9x Quick Slipstreaming Utility is not used to integrate drivers

3)If I copy all the .inf and .cat into the win98 folder of thecd (where the .cabs are) they are not considered.

Any other ideas?

Have a look at:
https://razorback95.com/projects/win95dl/history.php
Sew section "Integrating New Drivers!"

The secret lies within the 2 "precopy" CABs that need to know which new information files are present on the CD.

If integrating drivers works on Win 95, it also works on Win 98
