I am trying to get Fallout 3 working on a Windows 7 machine.

This is a well known crash-y game but weirdly I've never had any excessive crashing playing it over the years, whether an GfW disk version, Steam and then GoG... until now.

I've tried it on a couple of platforms recently and it will crash after 45 minutes or so. This is either the current Steam version or the current GOG version.

I'm running it on an AMD A10 8750B CPU (FM2+ Socket) which is a 3.6GHz Quad Core. It's surprisingly slow for a 3.6GHz 4C4T CPU but even so it runs FO3 fine. I've got 8GB of DDR3 2133MHz RAM and a GTX275 896MB. It also crashes on an Athlon II x3 760GS AM3 system, but also my AM4 5800X3D 6800XT system.

Does anyone know what helps crashes? makes them worse?

I do have a S775 G41 chipset with an E8500 board I could use, or S1150 H81 chipset 4770 system I could use but I don't really want to disassemble it all if it is an Intel favoured game...

Ryzen 3700X | 16GB 3600MHz RAM | AMD 6800XT | 2Tb NVME SSD | Windows 10
AMD DX2-80 | 16MB RAM | STB LIghtspeed 128 | AWE32 CT3910
I have a vacancy for a main Windows 98 PC

I remember it had issues with more than 2 cores. First time I played it on my Phenom II X3 it also crashed at least once every hour at first then it got to the point of barely being able to run for 5 minutes.

PCGamingwiki has a fix for that.

I can recommend installing at least the Unofficial Patch and NVAC (New Vegas Anti Crash) to improve stability. NVAC officially supports FO3. There's also Heap Replacer and Tick Fix, if needed.

Apparently the GOG version has the multicore crash fix pre-applied, but it seems that version is also crashing for Almoststew1990.
