Could anyone please give a link to (or send me) the Chaos soundfont 8 mb version? I only have it in sfark format and tried 6-7 utilites to decompress it and each resulted in the same sf2, which gives annoying cracking noise with all general midi files, regardless of effects applied or not 😵
Thanks a lot!

I have Chaos 8 Mb soundfont somewhere, but if we downloaded the file from the same location, it won't help you much. Try first these links:

What hardware (or softsynth) are you using to load it into?

The 8MB (as well as 12MB) version of the Chaos SoundFont uses a few AWE32/AWE64 onboard ROM samples. It's only a few (maybe only six or seven), but on any hardware (or softsynth) that doesn't include the ROM samples (for whatever instruments that Chaos uses them for... offhand, I'm not sure which); things may sound quite weird (or with pops and crackles).

To Batracio:
Thanks a lot, I will try these right away!

To RFNagel:
I (would like to) use this on a CT3900 AWE32. I really hope this will not be the culprit...

...the cracking I heard was, as I suspected, the error from bad sfark compression.

Batracio, your links were a godsend 😁
Both versions (or rather, both links to the file) work correctly! Thanks again!

Thats good to know. I never tried chaos font on anything other then AWE32, but I can only say that its one of my favorite SFs for AWE. In more then some games, it sounds better then chorium and drums are just plain awesome! 😀

Sounds like you got it working 😀

Yeah, any true AWE32 or AWE64 shouldn't have the problem that I described earlier (as they both have the onboard sample ROM).

An SBLive also works as well (as the drivers load "CT1MGM.ROM" for any SoundFonts that contain ROM samples from the older AWE32/AWE64s).

Glad it helped. I knew I had used Chaos 8 Mb on a SB32 and didn't notice any cracking noise, but couldn't remember where the file is. Fortunately it wasn't necessary to look for it all over 😀

On a similar topic, does anyone know where to get the 32MB Silverspring soundfont? I can't seem to find that one anywhere. (For AWE32, I just maxed out my Ram in that thing) Thanks!

PS: I found a huge list of soundfonts, Chaos included here

I have not found it (yet) but are you sure you will be able to upload that on the AWE? You have only 28 mb capacity if my memory serves, the rest is reserved by the card 🙁

Here's the website/page for version 1.5 of the Silverspring Gaming SoundFont, but unfortunately that newer version is probably not what you're looking for (it's 67MB) -> http://my.opera.com/Silverspring/blog/download .

And yes, as Jolaes76 replied, you can only utilize 28MB of that 32MB that you installed on the card (the last 4MB is used for ROM addressing, akin to/think of; an original Wave Blaster 1 daughterboard, and then the Wave Blaster II - which was more of an AWE32 than it was an actual Wave Blaster 1).

BTW, I forget the exact figure; back when all I had was several AWE32 sound cards (all with 32MB of RAM installed on them), I *used* to know the _exact_ figure in bytes; don't remember anymore though. Keep in mind, that's _sample_ size, not overall filesize (IOW, you could fessibly come across a SoundFont that was 32MB in total filesize, but the actual sample size was closer to 28MB... meaning that would indeed load without problems in an AWE32/64 with 32MB of onboard RAM).

BTW, almost ALL of those soundfonts (plus a cazillion more) can be found in this thread -> Creative Labs Sound Blaster ISA Cards' Drivers Collection (Old Thread) (scroll down to "Soundfonts Collection") 😀

I actually came to the gut-wrenching, horrific realization of that after that post and installing the extra Ram. 🤣 being overdramatic here...I suppose I could always try the new Silverspring on my Audigy 2 ZS/Windows XP system and run Chaos on my Dos machine. I'll check out those links, thanks guys!
