i have to agree 100% will never be possible with soundfonts are just samples collection files after all.

IMO Bassmidi sounds alot closer to my old SBlive Value (before the drivers got all buggy) but pitchbend/modwheel is way better on Fluidsynth

i made a recording of my soundfont with the above midi test file (thanks it was really helpful)
still off from the real thing

FluidSynth sounds better than BASSMIDI. That also means it's gonna sound different.

If by "sounds better" you mean better resampling and interpolation methods, then you misunderstand what I have gripes over fluidsynth. The last time I tried FluidSynth from the stable version I could grab off of SourceForge, most soundfonts (like the standard ones off of Creative AWE32/64 Live! and so on cards) are played differently in FluidSynth than a real EMU chip or BASSMIDI. And by played differently I mean parameters in the instrument patches themselves are handled differently in FluidSynth enough to cause me to detest it.

I was judging merely on how it sounds to me. Playing a MIDI file in FluidSynth sounds better to me (subjectively) than in BASSMIDI. Although that says nothing about whether it plays it correctly, so you might very well be right.

I also don't think SoundCanvas SoundFonts can work 100% because doesn't the SoundCanvas employ some actual synthesis methods during the lifetime of the voice? Stuff you can't really do with a SoundFont? Correct me if I'm wrong...

I have no idea 😜

In any event, FluidSynth is what I can use anyway now, since I've switched to Linux as my main OS and BASSMIDI doesn't seem to be available (which is very very strange, since there's Android and OS X ports, so a Linux port would be trivial 1-day work.) I'm not gonna boot into Windows every time I want to play a MIDI file or fire up DOSBox.

I'm in the same boat. I found something that may offer a solution, but I haven't had a chance to try it.

would any one be able to use a rom extracter to get the rom samples out of the orchid soundwave32 and make a soundfont out of those?

IMO, the SC-55 Preset soundfont sounds like Scc1t2 but with added echos, which seems to make the soundfont less accurate than Scc1t2. Are any of the samples different (more accurate)?

try turning off the reverb and chorus on bassmidi. althou the soundfont sounds seems kinda different imo too compared to the real sc-55.

hmm, using lsb function in bassmidi for roland gs midi playback seems to be quite interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4heEI0y75-o

well you weren't supposed to play native CM-64 midi on a soundfont. it's only useful for certain GS midi that requests CM-64 presets at Bank 127.

for mu2000, well it has loads of presets, also alot of the preset requires modulation and require customized bassmidi player for the LSB part.
the closest you can get is that DB50XG on the homepage with bank 1-124 mapped to the 1-124 lsb and bank 125 mapped to bank 64 msb. but it still lacks modulation for XG effects and sample is only 22khz. Or sample it from S-YXG50/S-YXG100 PVL althou it is time consuming due to lots of presets.
and OPL4? maybe this http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA024632/ ?
yamaha fb01, theres kontakt sound library for that (and probably some certain VST but not sure if it has the default presets).
wince_gm.dls, since theres no app that can open that file, maybe try get Windows CE sdk/emulator and sample it from there? last time I've tried Windows Mobile SDK, it can run ARM compiled apps without problems

Does spamming the internets with requests for people to do stuff actually work? Coz I got a whole list of stuff here that needs doing.

Nice work OP! I'm in a sound font frenzy at the moment so am looking forward to trying these out.

well the request for the Cards samples kinda makes me think it wasnt for GS use xD

Trying to make soundfonts out of those would be extremely tedious and nigh impossible without direct access to the samples. The GM banks used by various devices like that may be stored in ROM, or in a unique file format for which no editor exists.

Also note that some GM banks simply cannot be accurately recreated in soundfont format, due to using synthesis or features not supported by SF2.

Cards which use GM banks in a known file format (e.g., DLS format 1 or 2) are the "easiest" to work with when making soundfonts.

OK, how about doing a soundfont of the aureal vortex 2. My question is: does it use the same gm dls as the montego? also, would it be possible to do a soundfont of either the multisound or the tdk PCI soundcards? both of those cards used the same chip as the awe32.

i can confirm the the vortex 2 has the same ARL bank that is already around and converted (still have the driver CD)
many of thos midi devices is going to take alot of effort as in

(A) get a PC that can use the sound card and sample each note /implying that person has a working one on hand

(B) ripe the Rom samples /still have to figure out all the setting for each instrument layer /even with that there are alot of features soundfont do not support sense it was made with Emu hardware in mind.

the OPL4 instruments were already ripped in fast tracker format, so you could use those as a starting point. link is on the topic "old soundfonts hard to find"
