Yeah the trick was to use imagemake on Hal's megabuild and then fdisk and format it on ykhwong's [I then transferred the c.img onto my mac as ykhwong's isnt mac compatible]. There's a guide for this here: (Guide) How to Install Win98se with 3dfx driver in Dosbox

[To get dosbox 0.74 to recognize it, it was necessary to mount c.img with size 512,63,64,1023. Otherwise it won't work]

Anyway I'll post all the details regarding my error soon, but so far I've been following robertomo's advice [Windows 95 in DOSBox with 256 Colors, Sound, and CD-ROM support]:

"Windows 95B and 95C installs OK without any errors if you choose minimal installation, with standard vga and no sound card. You can detect new hardware, update drivers to S3Trio32/64 and PNP monitor and install additional windows components (if you need any) after installation. (if you want IE4.0 too, install IE4.0 before adding all these things)"

All works, appart from installing IE4.0, which gives the aformentioned error 🙁

So I successfully install Windows95C with these options:

- In setup wizard I click "custom"
- In the "Analyzing your computer" screen I click "No, I want to modify hardware list"
- Here, under "display," I unclick everything appart from "standard vga display." ALso I unclick all under "sound, mid and video" category
-Then proceed as standard

This installs Win95c with 16 colors and no sound. It is possible to update all the drivers to regain these capabilities.

However, installing IE4.0 always produces an "extracting file failed" error. This is particularly strange as all other executable programs of that type function normally.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The IE4.0 is the final hurdle to get daemon tools working so that Windows 95 could be a tad more useable/useful.

Again thanks for all the excellent instructions on these forums. Without them it would have been impossible to get this far.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea. I've never seen Windows 95 on Dosbox as anything but a cool toy, so I've never tried to do anything complicated with it. Maybe it's best to ask robertmo since apparently he's done this before. I do think it's possible since hal9000's build shows a screenshot of IE4 running: http://home.arcor.de/h-a-l-9000/index.html

Finally got it working. Had to use ykhwong's build to install IE4.O and then deal with the "windows installer" problem. But daemon tools are now up and running, and I gave it a test with a few programs which ran fine. There's still the garish yellow tint for everything requiring more than 256 colors [on the mac of course].

@dada: Would you be interested in updating the guide to include instructions for daemon tools, other versions of windows95 ect? Just a thought since they all function adequately under Dosbox 0.74. I can send you some pointers.

@OSH: Unfortunately no mac version of ykhwong's build. And my Windows PC is older than the hills 🙁

I could update the topic, but since I've never really used Daemon tools under Windows 95 myself I wouldn't know what to write. Maybe you'd be willing to write up a small synopsis so I can put that in?

I probaly did a rookie error but reading Dosbreak guide and downloading the 2gb freedos and using my original windows floppy as a image. I did all the step until im at the part where I need to install and windows tell me:

Setup Cannot read the Windows 95 Setup Disk. Make sure the disk is inserted in the drive and the drive door is closed.

I can't go further

Even thought im aware that it is not supported, Any helps would be greatly appreciated

IIRC you can only install the floppy version of Windows 95 from a floppy.

Easiest solution for you would probably be to install on VPC/Vmware/Virtualbox and then copy over the installed files.

I make the img using bximage.
I used hd, flat and put 400 or 401
the numbers come out 812 or 814, 16, 63
the total size is 399.66 or 400.66
It depends if I put 400 or 401
I name my image file win95.img
I put the 622c.img, firm.com, licence. text, readme.txt and win95.img all in the DOSBox directory.

I load up dosbox.
Z:\imgmount 2 win95.img -size 512.63.16.812 -t hdd -fs none
Drive number 2 mounted as win95.img

Z:\boot 622c.img

it loads up.
A:\>fdisk

I put options 1, 1 and than I get this message

current fixed disk drive: 1

press esc to return to fdisk Options
run-time error R6003
integer divide by 0

It does not matter if I put 401 and that makes it 814
or it I put 400 which makes it 812

What am I doing wrong?
