I'm having a bad time when it comes to Ebay lately.

Half of the stuff I have bought this summer have been badly packaged and/or with serious faults not described in the auction text.

I can't make return cases out of everything that should be return cases as I soon would get black listed eventhough I'm always honest.

I just let one of the "geprüft, technisch einwandfrei"-stores get away with selling me a P5PE-VM Socket 775 865P chipset motherboard with "issues". The first issue isn't a real issue just an observation, the board was really really dirty with some industrial residue covering parts of it, The dirt was hard to see in the not so great photo. The socket had one of those "geprüft" stickers over it so you could not see the socket pins in the photo. While the pins looked okey...ish the socket was littered with old cooling paste but it diddn't look like the conductive kind.

I decided to see if the board would POST and if so then clean the socket with risk of damaging the pins. I tested the motherboard with a known to be good P4 630 and a known to be good GF3 ti200. When I hit the power button I was greated with smoke and smell pouring out from under the Northbridge heat sink.

At this point I was ready to repackage the motherboard and start a return case but then I though that it wasn't worth it for the 37 euro including shipping as I just started another return case. This German "geprüft, technisch einwandfrei"-store isn't plain evil as it's a third party that does the testing for them. On the other hand the seller I started a return case against is just... well...

I decided to remove the NB heat sink to see what was going on... As it turned out a tiny resistor had literally gone up in smoke. After cleaning the socket I decided to test again and lo and behold now the board would POST... I expect smooth sailing form here on *holds both thumbs* ...

And now for the item which made me actually start a return case (after getting the finger when I contaced the seller descibing the damage).

The motherboard (from the UK) came in a large brown non padded envelope. It was wrapped in 1x platic bag and 1x small sheet of bubble wrap. The letter was shipped as an ordinary untracked letter although I paid for "Royal Mail International Tracked" and told the seller to use a box and package the board with care. I will spare you the details but lets just say it took a month for this seller to post the package at all so I was already at the limit of my patiance... The quality of his excuses for why he diddn't manage to ship the board reached the level of "the dog ate my homework".

Do not package motherboards like this...

The heat sinks are alot more misaligned than can be seen in these photos.

The board could very well work but I have just had enough... I will avoid Ebay for the next couple of months.

I got an abit siluro geforce 4 ti 4200 and it's giving this weird artifacting:

I4PrbD2m.jpg

Is this fixable at all? It was advertised as brand new (which the seller confirmed) and the components on the board seem to be in good shape. I replaced the thermal paste.

Fixable.. probably.. but probably not worth the time or money. Could be something as simple as a RAM chip needing to be re-flowed.

Not so old but definitely interesting piece of hardware - especially in this conditio (foil on stickers, never opened accesories etc).

Wow, I'm guessing this was the listing you got it from?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/253758589410?nordt … p2047675.l10137

It's not worth a third that. I doubt the fastest CPU it supports could keep up with a 24 bit/192khz FLAC file anyways.
I have no clue how you or Artex can afford listings like that as if they are nothing. I feel like we normal folks are being priced out of the better aspects on the hobby.

This motherboard was a piece of crazy marketing when it appeared. Of course a crappy onboard codec isn't suddenly going to get audiophiles turned on just by connecting it to an onboard valve amp. It was a gimmick and seen as such then and now. It is however also a rare gimmic, which makes it very collectible, particularly if in pristine condition. And stuff is worth as much as anyone is prepared to pay for it.

As for 'normal folks' not being able to buy certain things - yeah, that's life. Some people have more disposable income, others less. And some people choose to spend more of their income on hobbies than others. I certainly couldn't afford regularly buying stuff at that sort of price for nothing more than display. But there's no point in being envious of people who have more than you do. Enjoy what you can within your means, and if you feel strongly about increasing those means, spend your energy on constructive work towards that goal rather than destructive feelings towards others.

Wow, the tube motherboard is definetely an interesting piece of hardware. Never heard of it before. Crazy !

I don't know how you came to this conclusion, but the board from your link has no tube socket. (Edit: It has a tube socket, ebay redirected me to another listing, sorry .. but still).

Edit, totally forgot to answer this:

The main board should be a good one if it works. Asus boards of that time have quite a lot of tuning options.

Unfortunately it is the OEM version of the CUSL2 so I don't know how many of the tuning options got disabled, also the I/O-shield is married with the case 😒

gdjacobs wrote:

The PSU is not very high powered, but I'd say it's worth the $15 by itself. ASTEC is a pretty good OEM.

Good to know! I agree that 250W is not that much, but for my stuff it should be enough.

Its called working a decent job (or having luck) instead of writing one whiny post how you are to poor for your chosen hobby after the other. Good thing your not into collecting classic F1 cars or something like that, those cost a bit more than 200-300$.

Anyway, got my self another Ensoniq Soundscape S2000 since my other one has broken digital audio playback. Shipping from the US took quite some time and the card is in worse shape than I hoped for but we will see if she works. She was sold as being tested and working and the traces which are scratched seem to be fine after a quick multimeter check, so I'm not tooo worried.

yes, this was that listing. Last time I saw this motherboard on eBay it was sold for $1000 so the price is more or less verified by market I guess... Maybe from a hardware level, benchmarks etc it's not. worth that much but it is definitely very interesting piece of hardware, quite rare and in great condition - so for me it was worth it.

I don't understand why you judge and divide with such ease like "we normal" - so who is the rest? "Afford like that as if they are nothing" etc. You don't know that…

@dionb - definitely... that is why there were only few mobos with tube amp ever 😀 - all from AOpen.
You're also right about all the rest. I just treat this hobby very serious and every expensive piece of hardware is a result of hard work and logn time saving for that kind of "occasion".

Sorry there is a terrifying socialist movement taking place in the US right now from misguided millenialls.

Maybe there should be a separate thread for this discussion. This topic tends to derail sometimes...

Wow nice! I guess this is the fastest DX7 class card? The Radeon 8500LE and Ti 4200 made it pretty much irrelevant in its time, but it's still a neat little piece of history. 😀

That's an amazing computer, man. I've never seen that case before, but, it does compliment the setup that's in there. Check the caps on the board before firing it up and replace them (if necessary).

Received my second boxed ATI Graphics Ultra Pro (Mach32). I somehow feel the urge to collect the remaining EISA and PCI variants in their original boxes too...
